Here is how it works:  You can pre-order as many copies as you like of the full game, even for gifting, for $1(US).  If they make 10 Million pre-orders, everyone gets their $1 full game. If they do not, then however much was raised on the pre-orders goes to Amnesty International, and you can buy the game full price, minus $1.

Either way, I bought 3 copies. Win-Win if you ask me.

I just bought five copies.  Provided they reach their goal of ten million pre-orders, that's one for me and one each for the first four people to PM me.   :D  Go!

Same here but I just noted on the receipt it says Quantity: 1

I hope that's just a SNAFU on their part.

Sad state of affairs.  Either way it's a win however, the money they raise goes to Amnesty International.

10 million is a crazy number. They had to know they weren't going to make it. Even the Humble Indie Bundles--which enjoy a lot of publicity--don't sell that many and you can pay $0.01 if you want.

The last HIB, the Humble Frozen Synapse Bundle didn't even make it to 25% of 1 million sold.

My reading of the 'deal'/'special' is that if they don't reach the $10 Million mark then you don't get the game (but the proceeds do go to the charity).  What you'll get in that case is to be able to apply the $1 to the game purchase.

Or am I misunderstanding something?

I think the only thing you're misunderstanding is what Vashed wrote. You both said basically the same thing AFAICT.

Afterfall has gotten at least one not-so-great review:

The overall feeling I’m left with is that this is an independent developer who have reached too high. It’s an attractive game at times but it’s lacking polish, and (so far) variety in environment and action. Polish isn’t the most important thing in the world but it does matter when the creation of a certain mood is clearly high on the agenda. It has to be said, the mood is mostly lacking. It’s an action-horror game with passable action and no real horror.

[. . .]

Aiming for ten million preorders before taking any of the money was perhaps slightly ambitious and it’s one of the stranger sales schemes I’ve ever seen. Shame this one is attempting to be deceptive as well and seems little more than a marketing ploy.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the fact that the review said this game is lacking polish, even though it was made by Polish developers? :P

The question that springs to my mind is what will Amnesty think of  a fund raising venture based on a game killing everything in sight! Doesn't seem to gel with their profile ;-)

They'll never reach 10,000,000 sales so there is no way anyone is going to get the game for a dollar - if they did the business would be bankrupt because they have promised to give 10% if the target is met and if they do I can't really believe that there will be more than 10,000,000 people world wide that would actually want to play the game so they would get few more sales from it.

I know it isn't a fair or obvious comparison but I don't think Portal 2 has hit 10 million yet but has been named as best selling game of the year - and that is across PC, Mac, XBox and PS3, including digital download and retail copies.

it looks like AI had thought of the same thing..

Amnesty International terminated the agreement on cooperation in “Afterfall In:Sanity $1 pre-order” action.  AI justify it’s decision with a fact that the game is shockingly brutal.

The decision to terminate the agreement reached us before the end of pre-order action. In a document explaining the reasons of breach of cooperation representative of Amnesty International in Poland commentates that the brutality of the game doesn’t go hand in hand with Amnesty International ideology.
