Tuesday's online debate: Windows Right vs. Windows Wrong
« on: September 20, 2011, 12:12 PM »
Ed Bott and Steven Vaughan-Nichols are debating the pros and cons of Windows 8 today at 1p EST. Go vote! After opening remarks, they'll make a rebuttal and then closing arguments later.

Does Ed Bott use his computer for anything other than browsing the net. No one that uses Windows "seriously" is going to say Windows 8 is the right direction - not unless Windows 8 is released with the ability to completely disable "Metro". What utter rubbish.

Metro is just one view of the OS to make the UI more tablet centric, right?  Not something that you have to use...

I think you have to use it, that's the whole issue. Hopefully I'm wrong.

No,metro is not forced UI for final release. It just comes up with dev preview because they want beta apps. Wait for RC Build to see if some of these forced changes remain for desktop users.

Good, I didn't think MS would be that crazy to force it upon everyone. Though that is the impression I'm getting so far.

Me too. Windows H8/Metro is looking like the (proverbial) banana peel we all get slipped into the cloud with.

-- Is Microsoft going to a controlled "app store" a la Apple?

__________ & __________

-- Wonder if MSOffice still retain the Ribbon under the Metro UI?

For desktop apps? No. For win 7 phones they already have strictly monitored store for users.Check ars.technica for answers to your questions.

Must be a slow week.

Because once again ZDNet puts two of its shills up on a podium to start a faux debate in order to generate comments and blog links...

How utterly predictable.  ;D

I'm surprised by the whole topic. Are there any Windows left?

There are. But lately all you ever see is cloud whenever you look out of them.

That would be funny if it wasn't true; It's actually a bit unnerving.

I've seen a demonstration where they show changing the interface by swiping, a la the mac views or whatever you call it.  They do the same thing on the mac itself- they have a view that looks like an iOS view, then the standard OS view (and you can add others- virtual desktops by another name)

Yes it is. And a bit more than unnerving in the wake of Microsoft's announced plans for a walled-garden distribution model (ala Apple's AppStore) for all Metro apps. I started a separate thread on that here.

I saw that, however... My initial reaction to the news requires the use of language that they don't even allow on 4chan. So I'll just be quiet about that for a bit. ;)
