Well, it doesn't speak to the OP's question about essential programs, but it sure looks like there are some cluttered system trays out there.

PS Tray Factory does a nice job of displaying only those systray icons you really need to see.

Yep, there is some discussion about tray managing utilities in the forum, AndyM, check these pointers: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=2507.0
But still, i prefer my cluttered tray to having yet another app running ;)

I was interested to see both AllChars and AHK.  I'd have thought that AHK would have removed the need for AllChars?

i'm still learning to *harness* the powers of AHK... ;-) so I'm keeping AllChars as a backup...

Katmouse is a mouse-wheel enhancer. its key feature is:
moving the mouse wheel will scroll the window directly beneath the mouse cursor (not the one with the keyboard focus, which is default on Windows OSes).
