I'm in Florida; we got nothing. But I had been wondering how the rest of the folks up the coast made out.

Spartanburg, South Carolina - my house did some very mild swaying, all three open laptop lids flapped a little bit.

It was a strange feeling.

I'm in Maryland, and I was in my car waiting for the light to change to green when suddenly the car started to shake rather strongly.  I looked around, trying to see what lowlife was shaking my car, but I didn't see anyone.  The shaking continued, and so I decided that the car's engine was having terrible trouble.  I worried about whether I'd make it home.  Then the shaking stopped, and  I did make it home without it happening again.  When I walked in the door my husband greeted me with "We've had an earthquake!"  Apparently our house shook quite noticeably.  Fortunately, there seems to be no damage, not even anything that fell from the shelves, though apparently there was some damage in Washington DC and Virginia.

The damage was pretty devastating around these parts:

I saw this image and similar joke posted at least 3 times in the IRC channel today, so I thought I'd put it up here, too.

I'm glad everyone is safe and sound and that damage was minimal!

UK Geological Survey picked up the tremor on the opposite side of the Atlantic!

Some interesting statistics about frequency of earthquake occurrence around the world.

Apparently there are about four quakes a day of magnitude five or greater.  And, those are the ones they know about.

Mouser... Calling Mouser... Come in, Mouser  :o

Seems our industrious leader is in Indiana, which isn't exactly epicenter, but I saw the maps and the shockwave went pretty far...

@mrainey & Cyberdiva: Glad to hear it didn't hit you guys too hard.
I wonder if there's an easy way to look up DC members by geographical area...

@Deozaan: Aw, dude sorry about the damage, that's gonna set you back a few, eh?
On second thought, don't worry, it'll buff out.

@Carol: Hard to tell by the squiggles how powerful it was (doesn't look like much), but did anyone over there report anything?
China rattling?
Pets hiding?
That'd be pretty far out if it did.

No - not strong enough in the UK to feel it but it is interesting to see the seismographs picked it up over 2000 miles away!

I'd guess it would be less that a 1 magnitude on the graph. I have seem a 4 magnitude and the wave amplitude overlaps about five rows!

In VA.  Work is about 30 mi from epicenter; house  about half that. A bit of shaking, but no damage; precarious things were still perched as normal the only evidence was my sons Lego minifigs were overturned. Aftershocks last nit and this morning; again, nothing major.

In southwestern Connecticut about 46.5 miles (75km) away from NYC and roughly 330 miles from the epicenter.

All is calm. All is bright.  :)

A little tremor. Definitely enough to notice, but nothing damaged as far as this morning's news has reported. Yay!

China rattling?

Spoke to father-in-law in China, he says that nothing rattled there.

As it happens, a colleague here in NJ was on a conference call to Toronto. They felt the quake a short time after we did, it was interesting to note the time delay.

Hopefully it doesn't sound callous to say, particularly to those who *have* experienced damage - much less loss of life - from earthquakes, but: I kind of enjoy them! I say this as a West Coaster though. Maybe having grown up with them all my life has made me used to them so I can experience them with a proper mix of fear and excitement. Think about it: if you knew there would be no damage or loss of life, the whole Earth shaking would be a pretty exciting and novel experience!

That being said, I'm glad everyone is OK. FSM knows we've had plenty of deadly and tragic earthquakes in recent years.

I kind of enjoy them!

My GF gets off on violent thunderstorms and major blizzards.

You two really need to get together!  :-\

Here in NJ, just felt like my cat was trying to claw the back of my chair...but she was asleep in the next room.  ;D

I have been known to suffer from "snow fever" since childhood. Whenever it snows, I just HAVE to go out in it before everyone else does...which means the middle of the night. When I was a kid it meant sneaking out onto the roof outside my bedroom window, as a teen it meant grabbing my cousin and a couple of shovels and helping rescue workers down by the Parkway, as an adult it meant talking a 1.5 mile walk to Walgreens and getting yelled at by the cops and driven home (and told to stay on my own street). Haven't gone out in the snow like that much in recent years. Maybe I am beginning to mellow out.  :-\

Yes! Erm... I don't recognize anybody in the immediate vicinity but Cyberdiva and Wraith, and he's not even listed.

@app: Me too April, me too.
I LUUUURRRRVVV that strange, muffled quiet that happens after a good 3-6 inches falls in the early evening (which is about all we get here in the Great Northwest  :-\ ).
Me on the porch with a hot cocoa and a wool blanket, I could sit there for hours, listening... listening...

Good reports all, keep 'em coming!
