So, technically, how does the final SoftMaker Office '12 compare to OOo/LibO or, let's say, WordPerfect? Any decent features?

Many useful features and not as much cruft as comes with MSOffice. IMO a little more polished and less 'geeky' than Libre. (40hz does not discuss OO any more. He's mad at the people who are behind it.) You can still get in on the beta. Worth the download. Check it out if you get a chance since one person's dream of an office suite is another person's nightmare.

You can still get in on the beta. Thought it's closed now? @Tuxman - I just tried this link below with an alternate email I have and they said they were sending me a key. http://www.softmaker.com/...glish/ofw12betareg_en.htmand... ...just got the confirmation with a new key now. That was fast! Let me know if it doesn't work for you. Luck!

Hmm, only 10 days to go. Would a trial version of the "final" product not be better here?

All customers who own an older version of SoftMaker Office, TextMaker, PlanMaker, Presentations, or Ashampoo Office, are entitled to purchasing the upgrade version for just € 49.95 / US$ 59.95. ...
Seamless reading and writing of all Microsoft Office 2010 file formats: DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX are now supported.
SoftMaker eM Client 3.5, the new Outlook alternative that manages your e-mails, tasks, events, and contacts
Berlitz translation dictionaries for easy translations between English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian
Many new features in all of the SoftMaker Office applications
The introductory price of € 49.95 is only valid for a limited time. Place your order now to get the latest SoftMaker Office at a great price. |
~ as someone who has paid for upgrades from Ashampoo to Softmakers versions, I'd prefer a favoured discount. But I suspect that when they say " only valid for a limited time" they mean for those with older/cheaper versions. Full price is $99.95 for the pro version - I dont see any standard version... http://www.softmaker.com/shop/shop.php?go

http://www.softmaker.com/english/ofw_en.htm .. just below the green box it says Office Professional is already shipping. Office Standard will be available shortly. Since I doubt I would use the e-mail client, I am going to wait and see what the standard upgrade ends up costing I think.

Curt, what you've posted is the price for new users. I think what Jibz is waiting for is the price to upgrade from 2010 Standard to 2012 Standard. I know that's what I'm waiting for. So far, they've only posted an upgrade price to the Professional edition. I'm assuming the upgrade to Standard will be a lot less. At least I hope so!

-same procedure as last year, James: €50/$60, I assume.
MAYBE a minor discount further the first couple of weeks (the PRO upgrade price will soon go up to €70).
I am so far awaiting the Ashampoo version, because I still have a few yiggles...

Looking through the thread again for comments about the email client - trying to decide if Pro worth the extra dosh (would be helpful to know what exactly the introductory standard upgrade offer will be): Just finished putting the latest beta through its paces and I'm very impressed.
The new email client is quite nice. Lightning fast. Packs much of the look and feel of Outlook without all the MS Exchange baggage that comes along for the ride. [...]

I think what Jibz is waiting for is the price to upgrade from 2010 Standard to 2012 Standard. I know that's what I'm waiting for. Me too. I see the point of Pro for businesses brave enough to dump Microsoft (as long as they don't need a full database), but for home users happy with existing e-mail clients, an update of the Standard edition is a more interesting event. I've seen "Softmaker" in the Guests/Users list at the bottom of the Forum page, so hope they're listening...

but for home users happy with existing e-mail clients, an update of the Standard edition is a more interesting event. true, but who out there is really happy with their email client (or is that just me...) I'm using Tbird, mostly unhappy with the UI. The problem is, I suspect I'd have the same (but different) problem no matter what email client I used...

I am not sure if the key would work, but you can always do a user-defined install for Pro and deselect eM Client.

-just to elaborate; the Office pack is the first to install, only then will eM Client begin to install, but without asking - so one will need to opt out of eM before the first initial "Install". Hmm... did this "explanation" make sense?
Oh, yeah, I hereby revealed that I couldn't wait for the Ashampoo version...

No, you are supposed to choose "User-defined install" and then simply deselect the eM Client component.
