Auto-download from DC with WinSCP
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:49 AM »
I wonder if this is permissible and possible: I'd like to automate something that, currently, I'm doing manually.  I backup my Flatpress Blog by downloading it to my MyBook using Filezilla.  I understand that WinSCP can be used in console mode with an associated text file acting as a script.  I'm wondering (1) if this is permissible even if I get it working and (2) if permissible, does anyone have any experience and can provide a sample script.

All I want is a WinSCP script to automate downloading my /flatpress/ directory to my MyBook.  Then I can use Task Scheduler to automate this.

It looks like Command Line FTP would work too.

I'd say: Go for it!
The WinSCP script isn't that had to grasp, IMHO, and if you can do it by hand, who (c/w)ould stop you doing it mechanically?

I've been experimenting with WinSCP, but so far haven't figured out how to connect to my DC ftp account.  I dunno if I'm entering the connection string wrong, or if WinSCP doesn't support secure FTP.

I just used an evaluation copy of Beyond Compare and it did exactly what I wanted.  Identified the files on the server that were newly created on my Flatpress blog, and allowed me to download just those files to my backup directory.  Great!  Looks like I'll be buying this, but if I later change computers, will my license/activation key still work, or is just one-PC/one-license?  Anyone know?

It should still work. From what I recall, it has no (noticeable) online component to it. Hell, I am pretty sure it is a completely offline deal. And if it isn't, I had good experiences with them the one time I emailed them for support.

Absolutely — I'm in the middle of changing machines myself.

You can just install BC3 on your new machine and register it.  If it is possible, please go to your old machine's %AppData% directory and remove your license information if you do not intend to use that machine.
