"Anonymous" have scheduled Operation Facebook on Nov 5th 2011, when they plan "delete" Facebook. seems like a case of setting their bars lower..  :-\

Wow, they got big heads

It all seems a bit gratuitious, I won't miss it though if it does die.

Well, I use Facebook daily, and like it, but I can see their point.

I'll look forward to seeing what happens.

Announcing something like this months in advance is funny and nuts at the same time

It may get a rise out of some people in advance however. Which is a small 'win' in the event they can't make good on their promise to shut FB down.

Ah...little children and their toys. :-\

"Remember, remember...the fifth of November" - from the movie 'V for Vendetta'.

Likely they used it for inspiration. Good (enough) movie at least  :)

Kind of a shame all the good people that will get 'punished' (and all the social advocacy and charitable activity that will get knocked offline) if they do pull it off.

I always have to admire self-appointed champions who act as judge, jury, and executioner.

In that respect, they behave much like most governments - except there isn't even the possibility they're acting with the consent of the governed.

But I guess that's being a little too nit-picking since they're answering to a "higher truth," isn't it? :-\

Good to bring that up!

Ummm... And governments act how? :P :D

In the best interests of the people?

Please don't say yes, as I'll laugh myself into a vomiting hysteria.

No need to puke. All I'm saying is they're assuming authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner. Just like the government they claim to despise does.

How did that line at the end of Orwell's Animal Farm go? Let's look it up:

"No question now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

Maybe for this thread, and maybe for another... But very ranty...
There is a very big difference between the governors and the governed. To hold them to the same standards is nuts.

Why should the government be held blameless? The current governments in the west act as "judge, jury, and executioner" anyways. What's the difference? We KNOW that our current governments are f**king us up the tarhole. Could it be worse? No. It really couldn't. They CONTINUALLY limp from one crisis to the next. They're utterly incompetent. In any sane society we'd execute them and be done with it, then move on to some semblance of sanity.

The current systems have failed. Utterly. Completely.

We can't go from one crisis to the next and claim any remote semblance of competence. The world economy is a complete f**king shambles. DEBT IS NOT A STRATEGY!

There isn't a company on the planet that would put up with this level of incompetence and idiocy without firing everyone! Nobody is that stupid... Except for the masses... They'll take it up the tarhole again and again and again and again... Or will they?

And when they get fed up? What do we call them?

Cowards?

Terrorists?

Thugs?

Criminals?

What did people expect? Force people's hands, and then demand they be docile while they get raped? F**k that.

This is NOT about the MICRO-PICTURE. This is about the MACRO-PICTURE.

I trust Anonymous more than any politician. Have you ever known a politician to tell the truth? Fat chance.

Actually.. I have.  Not overly successful politicians, but yes.

I have too - they are usually sacked fairly promptly and disowned by their colleagues as "disloyal"

I've noticed that the honesty of a politician is inversely proportionate to the amount of power he or she wields.  Of course, that's a maxim rather than a theory, but still...

I knew a total of two.

One served one term. Didn't run for a second. The other served two terms and didn't run for a third. In both cases it was for medical reasons.

Draw whatever conclusions you will from that.  :)

Two thoughts:
1. I hate when someone is doing something I've never asked for "for my good".
2. Can't think about anything good coming from: My name is Legion

Both of these combined are TWTF for me :o

I for one can't wait to see what happens and would be thrilled to see them pull it off. For the lulz! I think it would be very funny indeed. :D

I would not miss Facebook if it were gone. It has wasted so much time of so many people... very much like the real drugs do...

But I doubt Anonymous can really shut it down for more than a few hours.

If they must do something to embarrass FB, I hope it's slightly more creative/entertaining than a DDOS. Facebook offers lots of possibilities. 8)

PS: Setting Guy Fawkes as everyone's profile pic would be pretty funny. NTM memorable.  ;D

They can only shut it down until the DNS registers the new nameservers/IP's - Pretty sure Facebook has plenty of both to play with if Anon do try anything.

Nobody is FORCED to use facebook, people have chosen to...so what they are doing makes zero sence.

I'm not so sure.

I think it's more like setting a poisoned steak in front of a dog then blaming the dog for eating it.

People are more like animals that what we'd like to think people are. While we consider ourselves "sentient" and capable of "free thought", I think a lot of that is quite delusional.

People do not always behave rationally or in their own best interests. With the increasing complexity of determining what is in one's own best interest, it becomes less and less reasonable to say that people must be responsible for making decisions that are not in their own best interest as the sheer complexity of some issues is well beyond the ability of most people to understand.

Sure, the dog may understand that poison is bad, but connecting that faint smell with the overwhelming lure of a big, fat, juicy steak? Not gonna happen.

Love ya R-Man! But I don't buy it.  ;)

If that becomes accepted wisdom, it provides the justification for setting up a 'prole' class like in 1984.

If people can't be asked to make intelligent decisions - and be expected to act in their own best interests - then we might as well hang it up and restructure our society along the lines of an ant colony. Because that's what we'll have become.

Seems like an unjustifiable amount of collateral damage is about to be inflicted on a huge number of undeserving people.  And all in the name of "teaching a lesson" to a large corporation . One which is not going to change anything it does in the wake of it - except possibly push for even greater government regulation of the Web. And likely cooperate even more with government law enforcement than it (allegedly) already does.

So tell me...what do they rationally expect to accomplish by trying to do this?
