IDEA: File replacer
« on: July 24, 2011, 08:17 AM »
The idea came to me whilst using Switcheroo

Using a similar interface

First row is the 'Target'
Second row the 'Replacement'

Concept

Drag Target file to 'Target'
Drag Replacement file to 'Replacement'

On running the Replacement file is renamed to the target and then moved to replace the target (though the sequence may be slightly different to avoid conflicts)

Mouse only operation:-

Advantage two file drag-drop, and run. Total 3 actions (4 if confirm is an option)

Existing option
Use Switcheroo
Two drag-drop, switch, select Replacement, rightclick, delete, confirm. Total 7 actions

Using Windows (7)
Select target file, select filename, rightclick copy filename, select Replacement file, select filename, paste filename, select Replacement, rightclick, copy Replacement file,  select Target location, paste file, allow overwrite, select Replacement file, right click, delete, confirm  Total 16 actions

If there is already something out there...

Many thanks

I've added your request to Switcheroo.  Please give this build a try with some test files/foldersDo not use it on your production files until you're sure it does what you want.  Let me know how it works out for you.  Thanks.

The file replacement appers to work ok. The only issue I can see is that it requires both files on the same drive.

Is this associated with the issue that existed where it was not the file swithed but the content in 1.0.3 build 1?

Ideally a multi drive environment should be supported

Yes, I added this as well.  I do not want to have to handle potentially large file/folder transfers across drives.  To begin with, I really don't like writing apps that mess with users files.  Furthermore, the native Windows API file operation methods are primitive and I've no desire to write my own handlers.

Ideally a multi drive environment should be supported

I wholly disagree when it comes to this.  Switcheroo was intially designed to switch two filenames that existed in the same folder.  This was to save the user having to manually use a temporary filename.  All this extra tacked-on stuff just makes me cringe insofar as accidentally screwing up users' files goes.

Many thanks for the reply. I can understand the concerns. I can adjust my workflow and probably accomplish the same with the new version of Switcheroo.
