FBI Arrests 12 in 'anonymous' raids

The FBI has reportedly arrested more than 12 people in what appears to be a nationwide crackdown against alleged members of the Anonymous hacking group.

News of the arrests in California, New Jersey and Florida was reported today by Fox News and CBS News. Both stories were based on information from unnamed sources.

Spokesmen from the FBI's national office in Washington and from its field offices in San Francisco and New York confirmed to Computerworld that the agency had carried out law enforcement actions related to an ongoing cybercrime investigation. However they would neither confirm nor deny the arrests or name the group that was being investigated.

A spokespersons from the FBI's Washington office and its San Francisco field office hinted that a statement related to today's action would be released shortly.

Today's FBI raids shouldn't come as a surprise, said Josh Shaul, CTO of Application Security Inc. "They got a lot of people angry," he said. "When you play with fire you are going to get burned."

This Just In!!: Pot calls-out Kettle ... This guy has apparently forgotten who he works for. Marie Antoinette made that mistake once. Once... :)

Quote
What is unusual, however, is that some Anonymous members appeared to have put little effort into concealing their tracks, he said. "It seems like these folks who got caught were brazen and careless about the way they went about their hacking activity."

Sounds like somebody went after the Decoy.

Quote
Many of the recent attacks by Anonymous and splinter group LulzSec appear to be focused on embarrassing the victims, not about outright data theft or sabotage. Even so, "they [law enforcement officials] are certainly going to want to make an example of anyone they can bring in," Shaul said.

Because just like every other street gang... Image is important.

As much as I want to agree, there are reasons in some instances, especially with ongoing arrests, so I can't condemn them for it out of hand...

I wonder if they got anybody important, or just a handful of guys running LOIC.

Probably nobody important, just like last time. But it sure does make nice headlines to say you've grabbed 12 members.

hehe ...Yeah, especially when you leave out what a small percentage of the whole that is.

I liked the part where they said a computer was seized in the raid. o_O Seriously?!? A computer ... Who the fsck has a computer?

Now if they said they seized a small distributed computing cluster ... I might be inclined to believe they were on to something. But "a computer" WooHoo ...I gotta go piss myself laughing.

The word for the day is: d. e. c. o. y ... decoy.

Indeed.

Now, if they had actually tracked down 'important people', then 12 could very well be a huge whopping percentage... I refuse to believe in this "zomg we're hyper-distributed like small terror cells!" mumbo jumbo, but it's hard getting to the rotten core when there is a big distributed net work of cannon fodder.

Apparently only one of the suspects? ;P

Depends on how you count, I guess. I've got a computer. And another. And yet a computer over there in the corner, playing a server. Do laptops count as well? Then I've got a laptop-computer to the left of me (for work), and another that I'm currently typing on. Oh, and that other computer in the corner, that's a computer of my brother's that I'm supposed to linux-up. :]

Truer words were never spoken.

That's the problem with getting involved with something like Anonymous or LulzSec. Unless you're in the core group, you're a sacrificial lamb and 'cover' for the real players when it finally hits the fan.

Basic rule of thumb #1: if your protest actions are going to stray into areas of questionable legality, make sure you're part of the "in" crowd.

Basic rule of thumb #2: If there's a chance of doing some slam time for it, make sure it''s your own personal convictions (and not somebody else's) that put you behind bars.

Back in the anti-war movement days of Viet Nam era, the SDS (i.e. Students for a Democratic Society) used to pull that trick all the time. They'd get half a college campus to show up for a demonstration. Then once the police showed up, they'd provoke until the cops started moving in on the crowd. But once the riot batons came out and the tear gas hit you couldn't find an SDS 'parade marshal' anywhere.

Before:                           After:

Lotta dumb-ass but well intentioned kids got their butts handed to them more than once that way. Which was fine from the protest organizers' perspective. The more students that got hurt, the better it proved what the SDS was saying about the 'police state' we lived in...

How's that song go? Four dead in O-hi-o...

You do have a much more eloquent way of expressing where my head is at for time to time 40hz. But I do still enjoy ranting at odd angles. The constant hype these days just gets to me.

For me it was more like:

Quote
I heat up
I cool down
Something gets in my way I go around it
Don't let life get me down
Gonna take it the way that I found it...

You say that life is a circle
But that ain't the way that I found it
Oh...Gonna move in a straight line
Keeping my feet firmly on the ground

I heat up
I cool down
I got words in my head so I sing them
Don't let life get me down
I can't hold onto the blues - so I play them

(with thx to Ms. Kiki Dee)

Understood, but I was more queuing off you 60's protest reference. Neil Young, Kent State, people paying a high price for "change".

There are generals, and there are soldiers ... Generals tend to avoid personal risk. As the rules of combat seem to "protect" those in charge. Except when we started shooting generals during our own revolution ... That little prank rattled the British a bit...

Funny how when Egypt was in turmoil everyone was yeah democracy. But when it happens here the antidisestablishmentarians come out in force and start harrumphing about why lines can't get toed.

40, I'm ashamed of you ... they go with the FBI jacket (founder of the FBI was a rumored cross dresser...)

<*headsmack*> Yes, I do seem to recall hearing that now that I think about it. :o

So in keeping with the Fawkes/V theme, all I can say is:
