If you're going to replace the motherboard/CPU, might as well just get a new machine, hehe.

Depends on what else you have in there.

Generally I agree though.

well, I'm doing that either way (getting new machine), so may as well mess around with this & see can I get it going again. Will have a look at it tomorrow hopefully.
Thanks for the tips Steeladept

I see that the power supply actually has a 5 year guarantee - this is still well under the 4 year mark
I'll probably bring it to the local shop and if they say it's acting up I'll return it

[edit] for my own reference :-[ here's a link to thread about installing win 7 on new machine: Win 7, XP mode, & other first install queries [/edit]

Well, brought it in for a "checkup".
They couldnt find a problem :-\ and said I needed to reinstall windows. (I didnt let them test the harddrives - but I've been copying stuff off of them for the last couple of hours with one of those external drive "readers" & they seem fine.)

So, either:

* they didnt do a decent checkup and they fobbing me off with "reinstall"
* they did ^ and all that happened last week was, like, a dream :D
