License Key is Invalid
« on: March 08, 2006, 02:38 PM »
I entered the license key as stated, but received the following error:

Failed to save license key information; check to see if you have permission to write to the application directory.

i apologize for the trouble -someone else just reported a similar bug to me yesterday..  what program are you using?  did you use the installer to install it? is the program in some location that might be causing the confusion?  I will have to add a message reporting where it is trying to save the file so that we can identify the problem.

once you tell me which program this is i can tell you how to set the license key manually using a file, and i will make an improved version which may help us know what the problem is.  feel free to email me directly for more help ([email protected]).

I'm also having the same problem. Its for the great FindAndRunRobot application. I used the key on my copy that is at work. I used the same key for my home copy. I got the same error. Do I need to donate again and get a 2nd key?  BTW great work on that app. Any help would be useful.

you do not need to donate again!

and this is same program reported by others having trouble - there must be a bug in how it's saving the key.
i'll have to check into it this weekend and release an update.

until then here is your solution.  this will work:

here is how you can save the license key manually in the meantime:

0. exit Find and Run Robot from the system tray.
1. create a text file with the following name:
   DonationCoder_findrunrobot_Key.dat
2. put your license key (which will be several lines long and
start with *r1; into that file.
3. save the file in the Find and Run Robot directory
(usually C:\Program Files\Find and Run Robot)

note that this license key can be moved between machines, etc. and it's presence will register the program so you don't have to manually enter the key when installing it on a new computer.

again, sorry for the troubles - i will try to find the problem and release an update asap.

Hey Mouser--

I'm having the exact same problem: first time I've seen it happen when installing a new FARR. "Failed to save license key information; check to see if you have permission to write to the application directory." it says. I have full write access to my hard drive!

While I'm at it, may I request that you put some more "smarts" into the installation process? I tried to install FARR v1.09.04 while a previous version was still running. Normally, most installers would detect this and automatically close down the current TSR. But FARR just gave this cryptic "cannot delete file" message. Took me a couple of tries before I realized I had to manually close down the old FARR tray app first!

Even stranger: when the first installation failed, I thought I had to manually uninstall the old version first. But when I went to the Add/Remove Control Panel applet, the entry for FARR was gone! So the aborted install seemed to remove the entry first.

Hope this helps.

Carl

thanks for the reports.

ok, clearly i messed something up with license key for last version, though i can't for the life of me figure out what i did - i really didn't touch that part of the program..  ill try to have a new version out in the next couple of days.  i've spend the last 2 weeks working on donationcredits and new forum stuff every waking hour that's why i havent addressed this yet.

regarding smarter about when app is still running in the tray, you are very right. i need to add that to the setup program.

Oh--and one more thing: I tried your manual registration method by creating the *.dat file in the FARR folder. The results are somewhat uneven: when you run the FARR tray helper afterwards, it still shows the generic "enter a license key" text--no sign that it recognized the license key. But when I run the standalone app, the Help | About shows my full registration info.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Thanks again for creating such a wonderfully useful app. I can't imagine using Windows without it!

Cheers.

ok i'm going to try to fix this now - it's a bit tricky since the problem doesn't happen for me.

does anyone out there have the problem still (or can make it come back) who can help me test new versions to help figure out when i fix it? (if you can meet in irc channel even better! #donationcoder on efnet).

i've uploaded a beta version to try to fix the problem.
anyone suffering this issue please install this beta as normal and let me know if the problem is gone please:

https://www.donation.../FindAndRunRobot.exe

note: as usual you do not need to uninstall previous version, just exit it from try before running installer.

Fixed the problem for me (thanks), although it should also remove the (Enter New License Key) from the About line in the tray right click menu.

I am having the same problem with clipboard help&spell. The key from the donationcoder site says failed to save license information. What to do?
