You may download this utility from my Hotkey Page

  ShiftKicker is a Tray Hotkey

  Install: None. Unzip to an empty folder.

  Uninstall: Delete folder made above.

  Usage: Hotkey sits in the task tray. Hold down shift key
  while clicking the mouse on a Window's Maximize Button
  to "maximize" with a TaskBar Gap.

  Creates ShiftKicker.ini file in same folder as ShiftKicker.exe.
  The size of the gap next to the TaskBar can be set using
  the PercentGap ini file option. This is the percentage of
  screen width or height depending on the location of
  the TaskBar.

  Note that this is a "hack" as it just resizes the maximized
  window. Clicking again normally restores the window
  to its original position and size.

  For this to work with Explorer windows the Folder View
  option "show full path in address bar" should be enabled.
  TaskBar AutoHide option should be disabled.

Shift Kicker 1.1.0.0 Minor changes in dialogs and menus. Mainly "ShiftKicker" displayed as 2 words. Just easier to read.

Thanks for the links. Actually I tried a few. Usually doesn't look so great in the task tray though. Too small for detail.

Shift Kicker 1.1.1.0 Changed custom icon. An artist I'm not. But at least it's royalty free.

Almost anything besides the standard AutoHotKey and/or AutoIt icons is good IMHO. It is sitting in the systemtray all day (I've configured W7 not to hide any icons), so it's nice if it's not too ugly

For the (gui) tools I made recently and published on DC, I took a screenshot of the app and migrated that into an icon. But for commandline tools I don't even bother.

I don't know how those artist guys do it with small images that look like something. Usually I take the easy way out and put white letters on a teal background. Even with the shifter if you look you'll see it's really IOU. It's way too frustrating trying to draw stuff with a mouse with the rubber ball inside.

The icon designers must use a joystick or something with more control.

Also I try to keep the KB low since it does sit in the tray and use memory.

If one of those free Vista icons seems appropriate I'll use it. Like a big green Plus Sign for Skwire's "Harvest Time" (I use it as a stack Icon to help me pick it out of the jumble.)

Shift Kicker 1.1.1.3 Updated About Box. Also changed Tray Icon so it shows About Box on single click instead of double click.

Shift Kicker 1.1.1.4 Added Ini Option GapSide. This allows you to pick the side of the screen for the gap. 0 is the default, and will set the gap to the same side as the Taskbar if AutoHide is not enabled. Use 1 to 4 to force the gap to a different side 1 = left 2 = top 3 = right 4 = bottom.

If GapSide is set to some other value it will be set to default of 0.

About Box has been updated with this info.

Shift Kicker 1.1.1.5 Now Shift Kicker will Maximize with a gap when you click the mouse on the Maximize Button. Hold down the Shift key to maximize the window normally.

Shift Kicker 1.1.1.6 Made a slight timing adjustment. The response should be more natural. Reversing the action of the shift key has the additional side effect that on Windows Seven you may double click the caption bar to maximize with a gap. Hold down shift while double clicking to maximize normally.

Hi Miles, can you explain more what this actually does? "Maximize with a task bar gap" - when I maximize (rarely!) my taskbar is still there. (Is that not normal behavior?) But then with these UI types of things, maybe the custom theme I put in a while ago tweaks my machine out of normal XP.

Run it and click the maximize button on a window. It's self-evident.

Well, I'll try for the rest of the gang.

For me an annoying part of Maximize is that it then blocks the desktop from showing anything else including other program windows. So what this program seems to do is leave a fragment of your existing desktop visible to that if say you are constantly switching windows you can click on the window headers back and forth. However, because the machine still thinks it's "maximized", that window is anchored so that you can't drag it around like you could if you just manually expanded the window yourself.

You may prefer Toggle2. You can use it to make 2 non-maximized sizes for a window. But using it is not transparent like just clicking maximize.

The reason I wrote Shift Kicker is to leave space for RocketDock without shrinking the desktop work area. It's not for everyone.
