Dot Whatever You Like...

It's almost here:

http://www.zdnet.com...9315570.htm?feed=rss

So long dotcom. The easy way to consult the internet will soon be via "dot anything".

In a worldwide internet revolution to be announced next month, web addresses will expand beyond dotcom, with governments, businesses and entrepreneurs expected to rush to apply for signature domain names.

So, you could have .donation or .coder or .applefanboihaterz or .wtf.

I can think of many TLDs that I'd love to start up. .nsfw would be fun. :P .ceo would be a cool vanity TLD for CEOs.

The squatters that snap up some of them will have to have very deep pockets though.

Some TLDs that I think will get snapped up quick?

NSFW TLDs
.anal
.facials
.fuck
.perverted or sexual stuff of any nature

It would be cool to be able to snap up a few. I think I'd want:

.ryan
.smyth

Especially .smyth. It would be excellent to have your last name as a TLD.

.cs would be an awesome domain for C# related sites, though I doubt the market potential for it or any other vanity TLD for any technology.

Regarding the Cook Islands, so therefore NSFW
The Cook Islands might want to register .cock as they already have .co.ck. I tried to get them to sell me isa.co.ck, but no luck. :(

I can see .中, .韓, and .日 getting snapped up in quick order.

Actually, .國 and .国 are technically the same, so would you get a 2 for 1 deal on them? (And variants like .囯 for a 3 for 1?) :P ;D

Or .rhyme and .rime? Any 2 for 1 deals there?

I guess $185,000 is a bit much just to have a TLD matching your last name. Maybe if you've got a veeeery big family and collect money from everyone ;)

Well, if I were to get my family "name", I'd have at least 3 different spellings that I know of. A 3 for 1 deal would make it worth it. I'm sure there are more. But I would want the more common "Smith" as well. :)

But think about it -- there's GOT to be at least 1 "John" or "Steve" or "Jason" or "Mary" or "Lucy" Smith/Smyth out there that would be willing to pay for john.smith, and more than just a few bucks. There's only 1 chance at that domain, then it's gone forever. Or at least gone for a lifetime. ;)

I would love to have ryan.smyth. that would simply be very cool to have. However, I'd need to get brian.smith as well because few people can actually spell my name properly.  >:(

So is Ryan a special form of Brian? Or is Brian just what people understand when you tell them your name?

Ryan/Brian are just versions of the same name. I really don't know how people the "b" sound in there. That just seems odd to me.

Names have different spellings/pronunciations in different places.

e.g. John, Giovanni, Johan, etc. Those are all the same name.

Smith, Smythe, and Smyth are all the same name, but different spellings.

It's the exact same thing as cognates in different languages. e.g. noire, negro meaning black, or beer, biere, or computer, 컴퓨터 (computer as a loan word in Korean).

I smell a DC fundraiser for .dy then the domain could be www.co.dy - either that or .te for www.dona.te
