I don't know what Usenet really is, so I thought maybe someone else don't know:

What is Usenet?

Usenet is older than the internet itself. Originally set up to allow academics and others in specialized fields to engage in group discussions with their peers across the globe, it has since evolved into an uncensored system of exchanging virtually anything that can be transmitted between computers.

Usenet functions a lot like email. Except that instead of addressing messages to an individual, they are addressed to a group. And anyone wishing to read or post messages in a particular group, does so by connecting to a Usenet server across an internet connection. A newsreader (ie.Outlook Express) is needed on the user’s computer to read articles and download attached files.

You “subscribe” to a group by telling the software in your own computer to check the messages in a particular group. (Don’t be frightened by the term “subscribe.” Nowhere is there ever a subscriber list. The term “subscribe” is used in reference to how you set up your computer and software. Only you and your computer know which groups you have “subscribed” to.)

There is no “central” Usenet server. Rather there are thousands of servers chained and crosslinked together in order to exchange articles between them, and to keep the articles available for their own users to read for a period of time ranging from hours to weeks. (It is this lack of centralization that has protected Usenet from the legal attacks such as that which destroyed Napster.)

I bought Newsbin back in 2006. It's a most excellent binary news reader. I don't use their search service as that's the expensive part.  In fact they are in beta for version 6 which is a major update for the UI.  Floating windows and such.  Has automatic par repair and unrar built in.

I won't get into a debate about usenet.  I think many of the discussion forums have gone to the web. But with dozens of thousands of individual groups I think you can find a few that are amusing.

Newsbin is built for binary download, as mentioned.  For stuff like Tennis discussion group you would probably want to use something like Gravity.

I also use UsenetExplorer where a license purchase gives you a certain amount of time subscribed to the search engine(was 18 months but I think it's down to annual now.) But there are free search engines you can use from your browser.

I did learn from experience that Newbin stores some encrypted data in the registry. If you use a registry cleaner it's a good idea to open Newsbin Help Menu and click Register/Update Key. Otherwise 7 days later it will tell you the trial is over etc..  The cleaner just deletes the token that shows you paid.

Their forum is quite useful.  Reported bugs that can be verified are usually fixed promptly.  The online help is being revamped for v. 6 and is vastly improved compared to 2006.

Also if you have multiple physical HD you can set the unrar destination to a different drive to reduce thrashing and speed up the assembly of the downloaded parts.

Usenet Explorer is also a nice app.  But I use Newsbin constantly and mainly use UE for the search engine component.

For $10 if you have any interest in usenet binaries you'd be crazy not to go for this deal.

edit: I guess I should mention, if you have broadband, a Giganews account or other comparable premium service, will let you download at full bandwidth.  Both Newsbin and UE download at full throttle from my Giganews server.

I see the deal has changed to $15.

Right now I'm using v. 6 Beta 14:
http://www.newsbin.com/beta.php

I think you have to be a registered user of 5.x.

I've been updating the 6 betas right along.  With 14 most of the glitches are cosmetic.  A few nits here and there, but it's stable enough I'm using it as my primary binary newsreader.

One thing I didn't like about 5.x, I liked to have the groups list on the left and the posts list on the right.  But having the groups list open meant I really had to use the horizontal scrollbar to have a large enough area for the subject line.

With v. 6 I can dock the groups list next to the posts list vertical scrollbar on the right and size it so it fits in the window, kind of floating above the posts list.  Plenty of room for subject line and other info with no horizontal scrollbar.

I'm not sure.  The wording doesn't say anything about an expiration for the offer. Their main competition is Usenet Explorer which is still $35. My speculation would be they are trying to stimulate registrations instead of everyone waiting for v. 6 to be released.  But that's just a guess. It's been $35 for a long time.

Even though if you register for 5 you can get 6 no charge I think the tendency is for people to wait for 6.  They can to the 10 day trial on the version they'll actually be using that way.

6 is a major update with data format changes(the spool changed again) and the window library, even though the gui itself looks similar to 5, is a new ballgame. People may be doing the old wait and see.

Newsbin 6 just went RC1.  Looks like the $15 deal is still in effect.

If you have Registered v. 5.x installed the 6 RC1 installer will act as an upgrade.
If you're not a registered user you're probably better off getting the Trial download.

Newsbin 6 RC2 is available for download.

I've been using it all day.  Seems pretty solid.  Looks like a few tweaks needed such as W7 Taskbar Progress being related to actual download progress.  Seems to just light up and do stuff.  But you can disable it in NewsBinPro.nbi [settings]

We are targeting July 1 to release Newsbin Version 6.
There will be a price increase to $20.00. Keys bought now will still work in V6.

The current price is $15.00

That sounds right.  RC4 came out just a few days ago.  RC5 was released today. Looks like they're trying to go final fast.  $20 increase will bring it back to the long standing $35 price.

Release 6 went Final today.

Hmmmmmmmmm, just clicked on the Buy Button and it still says $15. You may be able to get in under the wire before resumption of $35 standard price.

They surprised me!  Must be competition from Usenet Explorer.  Now they are offering either $30 with one year of internet search, or $20 with no search:

http://www.newsbin.com/buy.php

Usenet Explorer is $35 with a year search subscription and updates.  Maybe this will prompt a price cut there also?

edit: I mention Usenet Explorer because I use it too.  It and Newsbin have many similar features. I'm sure there's some competitive stimulation as I see on the respective forums, references to features in the other, requested by users.  The UI is the main difference.  I use both but I do prefer the Newsbin UI.  If NB is going to include internet search subscription for $30 a year I just may have to rethink forking out $35/year for Usenet Explorer. I mainly use it to search and as backup binary downloader.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.  But if you are not interested in the search feature Newsbin is a better deal as you can update the downloader whereas Usenet Explorer uses the $35 search re-up fee as a means to continue getting program updates.  It was a good deal in the past because NB search was so much more expensive.  It will be interesting to see if there's a pricing change for UE soon.

I am trying to find out how to configure this software (newsbin), I keep getting download errors/warning.  Could someone recommend a news server so I could try it for real !  Thanks.

i like newsbin pro, great deal.  The interface is a little techie, but not as much as Usenet Explorer which is the most techie interface.  Both are really good for newsgroups.  Newsleecher is definitely the slickest of all of them, but I eventually settled on Newsbin, no doubt helped by it being the only one offering a lifetime license.  If money didn't matter, my preference order would be: Newsleecher, Newsbin, Usenet Explorer.  My newsgroup habits actually went from Forte Agent, to Xnews, to newsleecher, and finally Newsbin.

@superboyac  I don't think I ever tried Newsleecher.  I did Forte Agent, even under Wine on Linux as well as Windows.  I tried to stay with the free binary download software and stuck with PowerGrab even after it was no longer developed.  But the limit on simultaneous connections finally prodded me to try Newsbin.

@MerleOne if you have broadband I'd just go with GigaNews. I've been with them for years. If you want a free server to test it out I'd ask at the support forum.  Any info I have would be several years out of date.

http://forums.newsbi...092b8872ba9b4d65bdd8

If you have a registered version enter it in the profile because it shows up on the forum.  Then they know you're a paid customer when you post questions.

edit: Don't know why I didn't think of it.  GigaNews has free trials:
http://www.giganews.com/

I've been on it several years and it's difficult to remember them being down.  Maybe for a one or two hour period every 18 months or so.  Something in that range.  And the retention is constantly expanding.

I've used NewsBin Pro in the past, and I always found it slow and crashy (is that even a word???)

IF I was going to get back into newsgroups, I would go with this:

SABNZBD+ = Free and open source downloader that is completely hands free (http://sabnzbd.org/)
Sick Beard = Free and open source scheduler (http://sickbeard.com/)
NZBMatrix subscription = $10 for 10 years of nzb listings that are monitored and moderated which gets rid of many of the viruses and password protected nonsense
Binsearch for stuff that doesn't meet nzbmatrix's standards if necessary

And don't forget the best antivirus you can find.  And don't click on any unexpected exes (which seems like good advice for RL as well, now that I think about it....)

Thanks for the info.  I've already got Newsbin but chances are I'll not re-up Usenet Explorer.  I kept up with both because they were adding automatic features.  But it looks like the reader you recommend already has them. I'll check out the sites/readers.

I got in the habit of running with Open All Groups In New Tabs unchecked.  The early 5 versions seemed to use a lot of memory otherwise.  Somewhere along the way, in the middle 5 versions it got very stable. Also I forget what version things were sufficiently automated that I could double-click an .nzb it it was usually processed without intervention. I'd just come back later to an empty download queue.  You can also unrar to another physical drive, which helps reduce thrashing.

If you've totally weened yourself from looking at headers then the alternatives may be sufficient.  But there are some groups I like to watch and it's just easier to get new headers with newsbin.

edit: btw that NzbMatrix is a good deal.  Can't go wrong for a bit over a buck a year. :)

Newsbin 6.10 RC6 is marked as final.  IOW, they expect to release the RC 6 build as 6.10 Final, in a couple of days.  Price with no search is up to $20 now.

I'm running it now.  Seems stable. The main Windows Seven feature I don't think they've figured out yet is how to show the total download progress on the Taskbar.

Damn, I missed this. So setting aside the power of usenet, is there any magic bullet/rare warez right now that should make me pay for the discount? That's always my fear for pay to download, never know where the sun might set.

I'm mostly looking for books/e-books. Not really asking for a warez list though. Just wondering if there is currently an item that would make paying now, worth it. Wouldn't want to pay and then spend months trying to look for something to acquire.

I would look at cthorpe's post above.
He lists some free/low cost resources.
