File Expert - Excellent file manager plus one touch HTTP/FTP server for managing via PC.
Didn't know about the one touch HTTP/FTP server -- handy!

Thanks for pointing that out :)

uTorrent Remote - Allows you to add/remove/manage your torrents remotely. I don't torrent often enough to really use this, but it's nifty.

If you're still using uTorrent 1.8.x or 2.x you might be better off using the MiniUI - takes up no space on the phone, just access via browser.

Eager to try out some of these apps, but not being a Market user, I was happy to find Android Freeware as it appears to provide a fair number of .apk files for download.

Prior to using this site, I'd been using SlideME and AndAppStore -- neither seemed to have RealCalc or ASTRO File Manager but Android Freeware did :)

What's your reason for not using the market?

Can you explain what it does? I don't get it just reading the description to be honest.

I can think of two possible reasons: 1. ewemoa is using a non-Google approved tablet (ie one without 3g and therefore without official access to the Google Marketplace) or 2. ewemoa's only intereted in freeware and doesn't want to have to wade through the thousands of paid apps that are available on the marketplace.

Thanks. That looks cool, but I'm using uTorrent 3.0 (Falcon).

I only mentioned it because a lot of private trackers only allow versions 1.8/2.0.

Originally it was because I didn't know how to use it without a Google account -- and it didn't sit well with me to have to make an account which might be associated with a device like a mobile phone AND applications.  Another way to put it might be that I feel pretty uncomfortable from the perspective of privacy.

3 (Cubed) - Cool music player with widget (but lacks EQ)
Trying this out now - do you happen to know if it's possible to display the time elapsed so far of the current track?

Also, is there "sleep timer" functionality?  I have SleepTimer, but it seems more convenient for this functionality to be built-in to the audio player.

On a related note, I'm also trying MortPlayer Music - have you tried that out?

Audiobooks - Quick access to LibriVox's entire catalog.
Nice!  I was able to try it out (I assume it's the same thing) via Android Freeware.

AdFree
I had avoided rooting until I read about this incident...I didn't succeed in determining whether my device had any relevant updates and this led to rooting the phone and creating an empty /system/bin/profile file.  I don't suppose there's a list of mobile device sellers who are known to be good at providing security updates...

As a side benefit I get to try things like AdFree :)

Thanks for mentioning it!

Now if I could find some screen capturing app I could download...

I'm afraid I can't help with any of these questions. To be honest, I'm not listening to music on the device very often.

RealCalc (free/donation): A calculator that does it all, including conversions.
Ahhh, the SHIFT key and then the 0 key for conversions.  Nice.

Wifi Analyzer (free): Essential for locating and evalutaing hotspots.
I like the graphical depiction used - nicer than the one in Tricorder ;)

  • Aldiko (free): Excellent ePub and pdf reader. I have several others of each, but find I now use this one almost exclusively.
Didn't know that recent versions supported PDF.  Hmm, no non-multi-touch zoom at the moment it seems:

And for anyone interested, Amazon now has an Android Appstore. That is, it's an app you download that lets you download Android apps. Kind of weird, IMO. Also, they seem to have different prices than what's on the official Market. e.g. Angry Birds is free on Android Market but costs $0.99 on Amazon Appstore.

But the main reason I mention it is because they're giving away a free app (that otherwise normally costs money (from them)) every day to promote their new app store. So if you don't mind downloading the Amazon Appstore app on your Android device to get the free apps, then take a look.

And it's not available in Europe yet >:(  (well, the app is, but you can't buy anything and not even download the free apps).

Well, not living in a restricted region, how could you :)

In this instance, it's because the version from Amazon doesn't have ads.  Not sure if that's the case for anything else though.

Couple other notes... you have to be able to enable app installation from Unknown Sources (Settings->Application->Unknown Sources) to not only install their store but also the apps you get from them.  Some carriers remove this or force it to disabled; hence all the messages about it not being supported on AT&T.

Also, I believe Amazon requires all apps in their store use their DRM and for an app to authorize your use it needs to communicate with the Appstore app.  Thus, while you can install the Appstore app on multiple devices and use your apps on all of them, your apps may quit working if you uninstall the Appstore.

Isn't it great living in this country-limited, carrier-restricted, DRM-ed world?  :wallbash:
