original win98 games
« on: March 12, 2011, 02:50 PM »
I am looking for the games that came with windows 98.  As I recall, they were also available on the windows update site but that place for 98 is unavailable.  Are there any other places to find it?

I recently setup a virtual 98 and am wanting to find the games.

If these are the games you are referring to, they did not come with Win98, they were not available on Windows Update, and they were not offered for free.

These were a payware pack that came on floppies.

I remember the entertainment pack, it had some good games on it.  I am talking about solitaire and a few other games.  these were the ones that were on win update site.  they were an optional download off of there.  I don't think Microsoft made them though.  I have downloaded this many times as my win98 cd didn't have it on there.

Its not that I have to have them cause I probably won't play it anyway (not a gamer).  Just trying to get it original as I can.

If you could remember the names of some of the games, that would help.
Perhaps are you talking about the "Plus! 98" stuff?
It's got Spider Solitaire, Microsoft Golf Lite, and a few others...

Ah... IIRC, yes.
Which is why they were offered on the MS website as a downloadable update for 98.

if you have the win98 installer CD, you can just extract from the cab files.

do you know which cab file it is in?  I have looked through the folders on the cd (except for cabs) but haven't seen any thing.

i don't have the win98 setup cd but most likely you can search the cab files that start with WIN98_xx.CAB. here are the exe filenames on my WinXP. they would have been the same on win98 too.

Off topic but:

If you're trying to set up a '98 machine you might find this amusing:

"Man upgrades Windows 1.0 to Windows 7 [video]"

Guy started with DOS 5, and upgraded to Win 1.0 and on through Win 7.  Stunning thing is that a couple of games he installed were still playable 23 virtual years later.

Now i'm an oldie - (once tried to use a windows 2 machine, and fell back to Dos as more efficient) - but I've never even seen a screen shot of windows 1.0 before....

I hadn't seen a picture of Win 1 or 2 either.  I started out with windows 3.0 and DOS 5.  At work we actually had DOS 3.3 installed with no windows.

Win 3.0/3.1 was the first version of windows that made any real commercial impact. Before that (91? 92?) I was coding COBOL on HP3000 minis. Z-fold green and white paper and line printers.....  And we'd ride mastodons to work...

Do you have a special purpose for that virtual? I can't see much use for it, besides the quick boot-time on modern hardware, but usually more modern virtual machines, like those running WinXP, revive from paused state quick enough and have a bigger feature-set and matureness over W98. :-\

No special purpose Ath.  Just did it for kicks more than anything else.  Probably won't use much at all if any.  I don't think I had done a windows 98 install for about 5 years, so it was good experience

Ok, so I'll stop searching for my old Win 98 Plus CD I thought I had laying around somewhere, seems I didn't keep it during one of the bigger clean-ups I did during the last 10 years

There wouldn't have been any Windows using DOS 3.3 because that was pre-Windows. That was the first version of DOS that got serial port networking capability (as opposed to the coax cable type proto-Ethernet / acoustic coupler networking that was state of the art at the time).

Yeah, I started out with DOS 1, aka CP/M. :)

That's why I still have Win 3.11 squirrelled away.  I got MS OSs going back to 2.0 because they've got different sorts of maneuverabilities and when it comes to hard disk recovery, a lot of times using a different version of DOS can be helpful.  Some guy had a head crash on an XP and the Rescue disk would give me guff.  I recovered what data was undamaged by the crash by using a Win 98 bootup/recovery disk.

Oh yeah---and Win3.11 still recognizes the ANSI driver. Win95 did also, to a limited extent but things got too far away from the ANSI driver beginning with Win98 SE and later.  Yeah--I'm an ANSI artist and I notice stuff like that. And there was DOS Edit--really the bee's knees for embedding low-ASCII control codes.
