JetDrive Defragmentation Suite
« on: March 12, 2011, 11:36 AM »
Brand new version 5, intro offer: 75% off the normal listed price: €10 instead of €40

http://www.abelssoft...?t=28&coupon=kck
http://www.abelssoft.net/jetdrive.php

JetDrive is offered in two versions; Professional and a feature-rich Ultimate version.

JetDrive - Feature Overview

    *
      JetSmart II
JetDrive defragments your hard drive. It does a far better job than Windows Defrag and -- depending upon the condition of your hard drive -- can result in a 20% gain in performance.
    *
      Automatic or Manual
JetDrive defragments your hard drives manually or with an automatic process called AutoJet. Defragmentation couldn't be easier.
    *
      Defragments your Registry
JetDrive defragments all hard drives, single files and even the Windows Registry with a special registry defragmentation algorithm.
    *
      Checks your Drives for Errors
JetDrive recognizes errors in your hard drives, and can even detect and fix errors automatically if you prefer.
    *
      Detailed Reports
JetDrive creates detailed reports of your hard drive defragmentastion process. It displays the current state in an easy to read 3D view and summarizes all operations.

JetDrive 5 is all new.

Nice discount, but I'm content with my current defragger so probably won't try it.

Can anyone comment on this defragger? Thanks for any info.  :)

I get very weary when I see stuff like "special registry defragmentation algorithm". My guess is that it can defragment the hive files that the registry is stored in, in which case it should simply state that - no need for marketing snake-oil.

And "JetDrive recognizes errors in your hard drives, and can even detect and fix errors automatically if you prefer." - what does this mean? Repair of filesystem errors that should probably be left to chkdsk (or a proper recovery application that doesn't do in-place "repairs"), or do they really mean drive errors? A pretty weird thing to incorporate in a "defragmentation suite" at any rate (including both fix & defragment in a "drive suite" would be another matter, though).

Ho humm.

Glad to see I'm not the only one tired of some of these marketing language claims.

These defragger software vendors try very hard to convince us they have reinvented the wheel.  Lacelevels, irreversible entropy, proprietary intelligent clusters allocation, blah-blah-blah. It's getting real deep-- magic dust/snake-oil indeed.

Hi all,

I have a strong hint that JetDrive is based on Mydefrag/JKDefrag algorithm.  Most new defraggers just propose a new GUI, and some extra features like a GUI for chkdsk as it seems the case here.  For real innovation (else than MyDefrag which seems to have very good reviews), there is Raxco/Perfectdisk, Disktrix, O&O, IObit, etc.

Anyone to second the link with JKDefrag ?

FWIW I've been quite happy with various versions of JKDefrag/MyDefrag by Joeren Kessel.

I'm not super big on PC drive defragging since my experience leads me to suspect many of the claims for the ongoing need to defrag, and the benefits to be gained by doing so, don't seem to hold up in the real world. I suppose it does no harm, and may help in some cases. But for most users, an occasional reorg with something like  myDefrag should be more than sufficient.

And do remember that Windows Vista and 7 have their own kind of defragger, to place applications and associated stuff in optimum locations, when it's idling.

Source: msdn blog
So many folks came to know that if your machine is slow you had to go through the top-secret defrag process. In Windows Vista we decided to just put the process on autopilot with the intent that you’d never have to worry about it. In practice this turns out to be true, at least to the limits of automatically running a process (that is if you turn your machine off every night then it will never run). We received a lot of feedback from knowledgeable folks wanting more information on defrag status, especially during execution, as well as more flexibility in terms of the overall management of the process.

I have always been hugely sceptical about defragging software. Then recently I upgraded my home network to gigabit, but was disappointed by the network speeds from one particular (XP) machine. It was achieving half the speeds of other machines on the network.

It turns out the hard disk was badly fragmented -- the 10 most fragmented files averaging more than 20,000 fragments each! In fact it was so bad that XP's built-in defragmenter wouldn't work. I tried it a couple of times, and it just played with the files but didn't fix them. Just kept reporting that I still needed to defragment my disk!

I turned to JKDefrag, and it did the job. It took 12 hours, but it worked. So yes, in my experience, an occasional defrag is probably a good idea and yes, if your disk is in a bad way, trying a specialist program like JKDefrag is worth a shot.

Seems to be "Day of Defrag" today since Softbuy is proposing a newcomer in the defrag area, Advanced Defrag.

BTW, one of the the reasons why I suspect JetDefrag is derived from JKDefrag/MyDefrag is that the options are exactly the same.

notice that today's giveaway merely is the Professional version, but that the €10 version in my initial post is the 'advanced' Ultimate version.

And it's even more Defrag Day since IOBit released its free SmartDefrag V2 beta 3.00 that adds many features compared to the V1.5 (including boottime defrag).  V2 beta 2.00 was quite buggy, this one seems better so far (file exclusion based on size works now).  On the negative side, there is a new driver running, smartdefrag.sys, that stays active even if the application is not running and worse, was also remaining there after uninstallation (last point was with beta 2.00).

Nice to see a "boot time" option appearing in more of the free defraggers.

Lots of decent choices nowadays. Still content with Puran Defrag here.

Scary!  :tellme:

I'm guessing that this drive partition was pretty full, with something like less than 10% freespace available?

Running tight on filespace contributes to heavy fragmentation. And if you're running with a dynamic swapfile ...whoops!...make that pagefile setting, lack of contiguous disk space can also cause stability problems for the OS itself.

The scary thing was I had 35 per cent free space, and the XP built-in defragmenter still wouldn't defrag the files.

I used my DiskTrix UltimateDefrag_3 to defrag my D drive. After a successful job, I ran the program again, just to make it analyze and display the drive's state. I liked it, I thought it was all blue = all defragged.

Then I installed and ran JetDrive Ultimate 5, and had it analyze the D Drive. The answer was something like "oh my god, is this your drive? Defragmentation is highly recommended!"

I didn't bother to test how well or not it would defrag. I just uninstalled it.
But it sure was a nice program to look at!

Yes, I am aware, there are different ways to defrag. What is order to one program, may be disorder to another one. My problem was that JetDrive doesn't speak about such advanced problems, it just shows 3 levels of need. JetDrive is not just "easy"; it is too simple!

There's, basically, two major parts involved in defragmentation:

1) getting a low amount of fragments per file; the "core" of defragmenting.
2) managing file locations on disk: consolidating free space, "optimized" locations.

Different defraggers will disagree on what "optimized" means - which is why, even for a all-files-in-one-fragment and all-free-space-consolidated filesystem, two defragmenters might want to completely rearrange your files.

How much rearranging matters depends on your system, disk access patterns, and religious beliefs; as long as you keep large files in a few fragments and your MFT defragmented and with room to grow, things will be OK :)

Just out of curiosity, do you know which file had 20K worth of fragments. Some sort of database? Or was it your pagefile or MFT?

Reason I ask is because I've never had anything to remotely with that monster of yours. And I handle servers and multi-user environments where some files get clobbered and frag up pretty badly in the course of a work week.

Always something new for me to learn about.

I've been running PerfectDisk Pro for a few years now. To be honest I wondered about the need for a stand-alone defragger in Windows 7 also, but PerfectDisk charges me a maintenance fee of, I think, $8 or 10 every two years to be entitled to all upgrades so I have just paid that and kept right on using it. Don’t know if it really helps but I am definitely defragmented all the time!!

I once encountered such files : .arx archive files created by FirstDefense ISR, an instant recovery software.

The most fragmented files were all video files, about 1GB in size.

And what was the brand of the harddrive in that machine? A Maxtor perhaps? These disco's are known to get slower and slower after several years of use, though I've not been able to do any measurements on them

It's a Seagate. But I don't think the drive brand is relevant here -- any drive would have slowed down with that level of fragmentation.
