Note taking Methods and Software

I'm sure you're aware of some of the note taking methods like Cornell etc. I'm focusing entirely on students and note taking programs which are helpful for them. Both web based and desktop. I know we have big review of text editors but i'm in search of note taking softwares like evernote(which can be used for Cornell note taking method).

Any suggestion for note taking softwares ?

+1 for OneNote. I am not a fan of it but for vague education tools, the ones I've often heard are:

Diigo for collaboration/web annotation and OneNote for notetaking.

There's also the Live Scribe Pen.

In reality - it's just hard to imagine what students would want. There's no study on it and it often times could fall down to what the university or the service would offer for free.

...and of course some of the more staple "advanced" one of a kind notetakers: TiddlyWiki, Tree Sheets, Sticky Notes software, InfoQube, Microsoft DreamSpark, Bibliographical software like Citavi, Noteliner, PersonalBrain, MindManager, Outliner4d, Rainlendar, WriteMonkey, Pigeonhole, Anki, CintaNotes (Evernote Clone)...but I end up dropping those except for the last four so I can't really speak for how someone with a heavier load would be productive from these.

The few ones I use that can be substantiated to something close to educational are Goalscape and Compendium and both of those aren't popular with majority of notetakers.

Compendium because it's used by NASA and Goalscape because it's used by someone who competes in athletics.

Though I use OneNote, Evernote, and GoBinder for the most part, Pagico looks pretty interesting.

@rjbull- i forgot about that thread and it was hard for me to navigate to get the best apps for student note-taking use. I'm concentrating on apps with GTD+Note taking feature for students. I know there are plenty of such apps out there but i wanted to which ones are good for students.

@Timmins- cool. thanks for pagico suggestion, have to try that one out now.

@Paul - These are some good apps with plenty of options for note-taking. Thanks. I'll check them out and see if it fits the needs. By the way, any idea where exactly i can download compendium(google is giving very garbage results these days here).

Oh sorry, I didn't realize you were going to be interested in Compendium (not many seem to be) and Compendium always had bad results in Google. I just happen to discover it from the Wikipedia article for Argument Maps.

P.S. For the Compendium, the beta/alpha is always the more cutting edge one. (as in it's more stable) I'm not a fan of it but the 1.52 one has a bug when importing and exporting backups.

(Haven't verified this with the beta but for the stable, anytime you import, your paragraph breaks always gets replaced by  \n or is it /n sort of like the reverse of PopUp Wisdom.)

I wanted to give Pagico a spin as well after reading about it here and seeing how neat it looked on their homepage.

Unfortunately the beta version 5 did not work on my computer, whenever it got to the point of loading a database it just locked up. I sent an e-mail describing the problem, and got an automated response saying in part

During regular business hours, it normally takes less than 2 hours (5 minutes in most cases) to get a response from us, and for holidays, it will be slightly longer but definitely no more than 48 hours.

I thought I would share that line, since it has now been a week since I got it .

Anyway, I installed v4 instead and that seems to work ok. It felt a bit odd it has to run a web server on your computer in order to work, but there is much to like about the interface I think, and I kind of like the easy way it ties together contacts and events.

Hi Jibz, that's strange, since I've raised a couple of issues with them over the last year or so since I've been running it, and they've always replied quite promptly (no affiliation here, just stating my experience)

I am sure they are just busy fixing stuff in the beta .. it feels like it's a small company, so I am not complaining or anything, I just found it amusing that they made such a rather bold statement in an automated reply .
