Ouwwww. That's not my spirit. I use shortcuts precisely to not duplicate file space. With seven real hard disk in my new pc I am plenty of space. Super plenty of space. I think a hard drive goes better is plenty of space. Today is easy with disks of 2 TB with variable speed.
I have downloaded the soft and try for the future.
 tongue

At the present moment I need to export some information and create recopilations of real files under relative hyperlinks under one single folder. Not a dozen folders inside 7 hard disks specialized. That's is mi situation for the rest of my life, but not for the rest of the world I need to communicate.

Sometimes I need duplicate the information in one single folder to share.....

Better to share.

Here's a mostly finished version, there's a couple more things I want to do/cleanup but it seems to work OK - it hasn't formatted my drive so that's a bonus.

What's been done:
  • Added: A real GUI
  • Added: Duplicate folder tree option.  It obeys the state of the Recursive copy option, ie. it'll only work on the source directory unless the Recursive option is selected.  Empty folders will be copied if this option is enabled.  It will duplicate the folder tree even if no shortcuts are found.
  • Added: Delete shortcut option.  It will only delete the original shortcut if the copy was successful, (that's the theory anyway), the existing source folder structure will be left intact.
  • Added: About button

Thinking of doing:
  • Adding an option to just duplicate the folder tree.  ie. Not to copy files/folders linked by a shortcut.
  • Adding an option to rewrite the shortcuts to point to the destination copy.
  • Adding a progressbar, (but don't count on it).
  • Winning the lottery.
  • Going on holiday to Tenerife cheesy

You can refresh the display by using F5 after the copy has finished.

NOTE: This program only acts upon shortcuts, (*.lnk), therefore it won't copy real files and it'll only copy the folder structure if the Duplicate folder tree option is selected.

See here.

  • Winning the lottery.

Do you need beta testers?

If you mean by 'beta testers', someone who'll buy the tickets and then give me all proceeds of winnings, (I'd reimburse you the ticket cost - I'm not that much of a skinflint), then the answer is yes  Grin

OK, on with the perpetually evolving piece of randomly generated code: Short2Real v0.19

Since you last possibly downloaded it:
  • Added: Option to just duplicate the folder tree, no copying is done.  Selecting this will disable the Delete and Rewrite options - makes sense once you think about it.
  • Added: Option to rewrite the original shortcuts to point to the new file/folder location.  Only done if the copy was successful because it has to delete the original shortcut first.  The Delete and Rewrite options are mutually exclusive, selecting one disables the other.

The next time you might download it:
  • Progressbar - still a definite maybe.

Feel free to test it out on your most prized files, files where if they disappeared you'd run around the house screaming, "I'll kill him!  Honest to <bleep> I'll kill the <bleeping> <bleep>!!!"

BTW, I have no idea if this will work on a computer using strange foreign characters, (foreign as in non-English).

See here.

Short2Real v0.20

The most suspected features have been added:
  • Added: Progressbar incremented for every shortcut processed.
  • Added: Log file that can be viewed/saved at the end of shortcut processing.
  • Added: Tooltips for the checkbox options.

That's it unless any scurry out of the codework...

Ohhhh Yessss. I promised test deeply.  Kiss
I am beyond many whats and returning. I have to complete the vast information project with your program.

Best Regards
 tongue

As you said the program now copy directories, even empty folders. Give information about process copying shortcuts and make copy of the entire original folder any, but give election to copy or not copy the shortcuts, even rewriting. Splendid.

I understand the possibility to rewrite shortcuts not in the original folder, only in the target folder. That's the transformation.
I understand the possibility to delete shortcuts in the original folder, but for me is not interesting this thing. May be only in the case I want to transform the original folder in the target folder in the same position.
Perhaps I am confusing myself.

This was in the case where you wanted to shift all the targets of shortcuts to somewhere else so you could delete the files in their original locations.

I understand the possibility to delete shortcuts in the original folder, but for me is not interesting this thing.

This was so you could use it like a simple backup/organisation kind of thing.  eg. You could collect shortcuts to various files/folders on your drives into one folder, (without having to physically move them), then later, (say once a week/month), just run the program to copy them all to one place without doing it one at a time.  The shortcuts are deleted ready for the next time you want to do it for a different set of files/folders.

I had to add the shortcut deletion anyway for the rewriting section so I made it a separate option.

One thing I forgot to do was check to see if there's enough drive space on the destination, so I think currently if you run out it'll just show up as failed copies in the log.  Calculating total copy size is something I can add but it would probably slow down the operation if there's folders with lots of files.  Something I'll look into.

First Scenario

Expected : don't copy the real files
Unexpected : don't find any shortcut and creates only the folder CRONO empty. This folder contains 18 real folders and six shortcuts to folders. And inside contains more files, folders and shortcuts.

Really I need the scenery two.

The recursive copy I think is for replicate the folder tree and all the shortcuts to be copied. Don't go well. The shortcuts are not copied.

I think the soft may need to be revised or I am doing something bad.

Best Regards.

I have to revise the scenery third and fourth because at the present moment I observ in the

M:\Documents and Settings\JOSE\Escritorio\0486.11.DE.001 folder that I have the crono folder created with the corresponding subfolders. And with the shorcuts converted. Even the folder shortcuts converted.

I suspect that the logs offering the total shortcuts copied is not so fast. The script continues working even in the case of other execution in the scenery fourth where no shorcuts are copied.

I will try again and again over

M:\Documents and Settings\JOSE\Escritorio\0486.11.DE.002

I have to test the program and wait about 30 minutes to see interaction before try another options.
I want to convert the shorcuts in real files and folders.

And according to my interpretation of the program instructions I have to mark nothing. Only select source folder and target folder and execute.
I try after reiniate the system and prepared the new target folder

I received No shortcuts found and nothing is copied to the destination folder.

So I continue thinking the scenerio three Recursive copy is the adequate and I will have to wait to see the results. 30 minutes I suppose, and will comment.

I have repeat the scenerio third. Received the message 436 shortcuts copied . I supposed the program is working in the background.
I have save this time the log.
I think I have to wait. I don't see in the opened target folder any change.
I click on the until now empty folder and actulize. The CRONO folder appear.
The script is working in the background.....

The program don't copy normal files, only shortcuts.
So I have make first a copy or the source folder in the target folder of all the files.
Then see the corresponding files to the shortcuts created by the program and delete them in the target folder after verify that the file they are pointing is copied in the target folder.

I'll try this in
M:\Documents and Settings\JOSE\Escritorio\0486.11.DE.003

Done.
Now I will delete by hand the shorcuts in DE.003 (M:\Documents and Settings\JOSE\Escritorio\0486.11.DE.003) testing the corresponding real files.
The source folder contains 1194 files and 20 folders with 114 MB. The destination folder at the present time contains 2957 files and 124 folders with 2.69 GB.

 tongue

I take notes of all this to not forget. I will comment everything

Best Regards

I received this time the message total shortcuts found 436, succefully copied 434

I'm currently hiding from the tax people in the UK at the moment, (not too far from a certain DC member in Yorkshire Wink ), but to answer some of the above:

  • It only works on shortcuts.  I could add in copying of actual files/folders but it would be slow compared to some programs out there.  If you want to copy all files/folders excluding shortcuts, try:
    xcopy source destination /E /EXCLUDE:.lnk
This will duplicate the folder structure, (including empty folders), and copy all files/folders except shortcuts.
  • It doesn't run in the background, the progressbar is updated as each shortcut is processed and the results are displayed when all processing is finished.
  • You can refresh the Short2Real directory display by pressing F5.
  • You'll need to refresh explorers' file view by pressing F5.

I am under windows xp pro. I don't really understand some concepts. symlink feels very similar to shortcut, but I don't know.

Should be easy enough, (FLW), as I said above, I'm currently in the UK but I have the source on the netbook so I should be able to mod it.

Just don't expect it to happen in the next few days - I'm technically kind of on holiday smiley

Just to clarify, do you want symlinks, hardlinks or both (hardlinks are the easiest to do) ?

Symlinks are restricted to NT6+, (Vista and above).
