The article itself gives some hints:

The monitoring programs are often hidden inside ordinary software downloads, e-mail attachments or files shared over peer-to-peer networks. They can even be embedded in Web pages, taking advantage of browser features that allow programs to run automatically.

Just don't click any attachment you get, don't download/run every .exe you find online/in P2P-networks :)

Personally, I don't see how I could lose money with that. Here, you don't need just a password for online banking, you also need a different password (from a list you have on paper) every time you transfer money online.

Maybe it could work for Paypal etc.
