DC T-Shirts idea.
« on: January 08, 2009, 09:58 AM »
Just short note.

I've just read article about QR Codes and I think it could be nice to have them generated for DonationCoder.com and available for printing on T-Shirts (on CafePress).

End of my brilliant idea ;)

AHA! So those funky drawings were Japanese bar codes... I was confused to see them in some websites and not knowing what the heck they were (or how to interpret them)

I think housetier is using one in his avatar, even.

Wow, it works! (I'm not going to reveal its contents, though.) Anyway, it's the first meaningful usage since I installed the Kaywa Reader in my cell phone a year ago. Are they used at all?

Heh, there's a googlecode project called zxing - they claim it's for "zebra crossing". Am I the only one who reads that as something tooootally different? :-[

As far as I can read on wiki, they are popular on Japan (on billboards).

I really like an idea like this:
1. you're walking on the street and see nice ad,
2. you take a photo of that and start reader app,
3. whoosh... you're on product's website.

It is definitely better than trying to type URL.

On the other hand: QR Codes might provide other usefull information (take a look on sample ZXing frontend).

Here's a plugin for Firefox: Mobile Barcoder

Let's you generate a QR Code for the page you're viewing and zap it with your mobile.

Although the use the site gives for it is rather strange, ie. why would you generate a barcode for a site you're browsing with Firefox on a PC just so you can then have the pleasure of squinting while trying to read it on your phone ?

I'd much rather have a plugin that let's me read QR Codes from within Firefox.

I use a similar one as my avatar. The "square code" is just an encoded url, can you find out which? ;)

Hm. Google's reader and some sample applet from japanese site are saying that your avatar contains no data.
I will try firefox extension (2 available).

Hm, it looks like semacode is not very popular. There are many applications (online / desktop / mobile) which can read QR but I can't find anything valuable for semacode*. Two or three midlets but nothing for desktop. The only online reader is "facebook app". I don't have F. account so I don't even know what such term means ;)

*) This might not be completely true. You can find generators at least.

semacode looks more like the one used by Deutsche Bahn for train tickets bought online - the conducter reads the code then

yeah maybe QR is better suited for the mobile world. I don't mind though, my avatar is unique whether or not people can decode it :D

Really, I was able to find only 2(the one by P2 Labs described here is a 3rd one), which QR code readers for PCs have you found? The QuickMark one requires you to register with an ID and password and you have to give an email address for verification. They produce this QR code for DonationCoder:

Donation Coder QRcode.jpg

These are the ones I found:

Free QR Code Reader & Generator Software for Windows

QuickMark Mobile Barcode - QuickMark for PC

Thanks for sharing your find, Arizona Hot. I've been wondering where to find software to generate these things for a while now.
