Strangeness in posting...
« on: January 16, 2011, 12:42 PM »
But how can I refrain from bantering with you if you've gone?

He's actually been very civil. He gave his opinion of something in the product, in a non-negative manner, and there you appeared again.  He's actually been quite nice, so desisting from the personal attacks and as mouser said being nice would be helpful.

If you look at the referenced topic, it was edited at 4:27AM today.  The part that's quoted is from timns posting.  This is *not* what I quoted, and indeed I was not even awake at 4:27AM.

Any thoughts on how this could occur?  Also, there was a PM that was listed as unread the last time I logged in... but now it's not.  Is there any way to see the IP address of where a person logged in from?

By gum, you're right. I remember your posting appearing differently yesterday. I truly hope you're not being hacked.

I changed the password here to one of my more secure passwords.  From what was done, I can think of one conclusion, but that's a bit beyond the pale... but then considering history, that makes it a bit less so.

It does rather change the tone of your posting.

Here's what I have from yesterday:

timns, you started bad-mouthing our product. You should stop it now, OK? It is for no good.

just fyi: I certainly didn't change your post, and neither would anyone at dc.
sounds like something weird must have happened -- i think you woke up and sleep-posted a kind word.

actually yes, we can look up the ips for all the recent posts you've made, and they all come from two ips that you have been using for all your posts.

don't forget that the time stamp refers to central time in the US. or rather, its showing what YOU set your time offset to be from the server time so make sure you have that correct.

so i think there are two possibilities -- either you really did wake up and make a sleep post, which is kind of a fun idea and seems possible.  or something else got screwy on the forum and someone posted a reply and somehow it got recorded as from you instead of them..

one more clue:

looking at the edit, i can see that one other change was made to the text: from "and there you appeared" to "and there you appeared again." which seems to me an odd change for someone else to do besides you.. maybe you edited that one line and somehow the quote got messed up..

regardless, while posts are each tagged with the ip of poster, mods aren't.  though the log of user logins does list ips (and only shows yours), i am modifying the post modification log code to record ips as well, so that should solve the mystery if it ever happens again.

I have now made the changes, so while i still think sleep-posting or something else equally harmless is the most likely cause, i'll now be able to look up the ip and other info associated with every edit made on the forum if need be.

The weirdest thing to me is that I had an unread PM; I'd seen it by e-mail, so I hadn't read it on the board.  But now it's showing up read.  It's not a big deal- I was just wondering because it struck me as odd.

Thanks for looking into it, though.

@Mouser - Sleep-posting? Intriguing idea + great descriptive term. Is that your own?
