there's always the analogue solution - always on, instant availability, no distractions

No distractions until you receive a non-identifiable "PC LOAD LETTER" error ;-)

my only issue with this solution is that the font it comes with is terrible

Just use TinyCore Linux and install Abi Word or some similar word processor.

Very minimalistic (~10MB full iso) and would do the job nicely, I think.
