Need help with finding info on Pocket Fujica 200 camera
« on: December 27, 2010, 08:23 AM »
Hello! I know this is probably not the best forum to post this, but you people seem better at finding stuff on the net then I am, and maybe some of you will know personally what this thing is.

So I went on my semi-annual trip to visit my relatives in Indonesia, and one of them passed me this, thinking I might be interested in it and also because they were clearing space.

Now I tried to look for information about the Fujica on the net, but all I could find about it was people selling it. (Probably not a good sign.)

I would like to ask all of you to tell me anything you people know or can find out about this camera (cause I am interested in using it).

What I would really like to know:
Does it take colour or b&w?
Does it take batteries?
What film does it take?
Where would I get the film?

Thanks to of all of you in advance for the help!

Looks like a 110.

And, yes it is:

http://www.ozcamera.com/fujica.html

http://www.subclub.org/shop/fuji110.htm

Pocket 200

(1977) 29mm (f11.0), (3/3) fixed-focus lens. Mechanical shutter with speed of 1/60. No exposure control. Tripod and cable release sockets.  Built-in UV filter.  Designed for 100 ASA film.  Since the camera does not use the film perforations to cock the shutter, this camera can be reloaded with 16mm film -- in 110 cassettes -- if the cassette is notched on the bottom edge to allow the shutter to trip.

Oh... Just to note... You'll likely need to custom order 110 film and flashes for it. Don't expect it to be cheap.

They must have a really small house if this is needed to be removed to clear space :D

I'd just keep it for old times sake, and try to use it for anything, it's so darned old you will be hard pressed to find the proper material for it to make pictures onto, and then a service to get them developed. A (cheap) digital camera (~us$100,-) will probably be cheaper after about 5 or 10 full rolls of pictures, and give much better foto quality and ease of use (delete bad/fuzzed up pictures), and the printing cost will be lower or equal.

It looks like the film is $8~10 USD a roll, and those are for 24 exposures. Of expired film.

I'd agree with above -- the camera is for collecting, not for taking pictures.

Also be aware that the small negative size and simple lens setup will prevent you from getting any picture above "snapshot" grade quality. Enlargements are a particular problem with 110 format due to excessive graininess once you try to print it above 5x7.

+1 with Ath on keeping it for sentimental value and the fact it was a gift from family.

Unfortunately, 110 is an orphan. I think I have three 110-format cameras sitting in a drawer somewhere. There are still some diehards that keep it going, but probably more for nostalgia and sheer bloody-mindedness than anything else. One of my godchildren is at college majoring in photography. The was one person in her major who recently did an exhibit of 110 photos he had taken. It was very well received. Even the ultra-techno crowd thought it was completely "entrenched."

(Entrenched???)

Some additional 110 info here.

But as was noted, it still isn't cost effective for day-to-day use since 24 exposures will cost about $8 to develop and print. Then there's shipping. Most film developers ask for $4-5 per order for shipping and handling. The film cartridges themselves run about $8/ea for 24 exposures. So figure it will cost you $0.88 per picture ($8 film + $8 processing + $5 shipping /24 ) for the first roll, and $0.67 for each print after that.

As you can see, an inexpensive digital camera could be bought for around what it would cost you to do a small number of film rolls (assuming you can get them to begin with). It would also provide you with much higher quality images - and a future.

Luck! :)

@Xenonym

I will dig through the attic later this week - I keep having this idea that somewhere in amongst the cobwebs I have a couple of unopened 110 films kept for sentimental reasons. If I find them you can have them (well past their expiry date so you may have some unusual colour shift!!).

@Renegade: I have the flashes actually, but they are not likely to be in a working condition.

@Ath: It's not a small house actually, it's actually the storeroom that is crowded. Due to the diligence of a (deceased) relative, it is absolutely packed to the brim with things from years gone by. Among them are charcoal irons, old cigarette cases and well, this. They are still trying to clear it up.

@Beth UK: Thanks a lot! I really hope you find them.

I will probably keep it for collection since film is so difficult to find, but I will try to shoot 1 roll just for fun.

Thanks to all of you for the help!

Adox, a German company, is supposedly making new 110 film, and pretty much will have the market cornered on unexpired film, with no competition.

And they say to buy it here: http://www.fotoimpex...rekt&artnr=21490

I might actually buy it if I understood the page. Is it saying it costs 5 eur or 4 eur?

I think it is 5.83 with VAT, 4.90 without.
