Google's thumbnail pop-ups
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:59 PM »
Those not-so-little images of the website that popup on the right of the search results are awful.

Anyone know how to turn them off permanently?

scroll all down and select old classic view.

I'm sure you're right, but I can't find it at the moment. I'll kill my browser and try again later, so thanks!

On my Firefox, Google has no thumbnails.

Mine did, but now they are gone again. FF itself blocking somehow?

Okay, you read it before I deleted it. I was talking about Google Image Search, you may have been talking about a normal Google-"word-search"?

I was just checking my Firefox addons, and realized that I don't know why I have no thumbnails. It must be your personal settings at Google, determining what feature is being used. I don't know.

I don't really mind the thumbnails, because at least for me, I have to click on the little magnifying glass before they even show up. So I don't ever see them.

i think turning off the instant search stops the thumbnails. after that, you can view the thumbnails but first, you have to click within a paragraph of one of the results.

Thanks, I'll check my settings one more time. Instant search used to be off, but I have lost those settings several times, and not really noticed in time to try and figure out why.

if you get nowhere with that, you could try the google keyboard shortcuts experiment from the labs. I use it as my default search page - instant search is off and i only see thumbnails when i click on a paragraph. more than that, the shortcuts are very handy - i don't understand why they aren't part of standard search (those stupid cursor shortcuts they added to standard search were just insane, these labs shortcuts are actually usable).

timns, if you have your browser setup to clear cookies, you may lose settings as I believe that's where Google stores them.

My favorite Greasemonkey script GoogleMonkeyR just got updated yesterday. Now has "Site Preview" under "Remove" section :) He says it is "directly" compatible with Google Chrome and Opera http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9310
