IDEA: Lock icons in place on desktop
« on: February 16, 2006, 08:20 AM »
I want a simple program that can lock all icons on my desktop to their current position. My daughter is learning to use a computer and it is annoying when she moves all my icons trying to double click on her dora the explorer game icons. Any ideas for this?

I am using wintidy now, but currently it still lets icons be moved. Is there ANY way to LOCk icons on the desktop so they cannot be moved? Or an app that will password protect the desktop so that you cant move icons without a pass?

If your comfortable using regedit and understand the consequences of altering the registry then go here:

Lock Icons On Desktop

If not then I could script something to do it.
Always back up your registry before making changes.

Josh:
instead of finding a way to make desktop icons unmoveable, why don't you just hide them temporarily? then, your kid can use the start menu or quick-launch or an app-launcher like LaunchBar Commander... ;-)

ok, wintidy used to work in winxp pro, but with media center it fails. I like the way wintidy works, but I have yet to find another app that does what it can. Can anyone generate an app for me that will work like wintidy does, allowing you to save layouts by name, and then have a single click restore of the icon positions?

DeskLock - Prevents the moving of desktop icons.

Features:
- DoubleClick the tray icon to Disable/Enable.
- Option to disable left drag and right mouse button.

You'll find the downloads and more info at 1 Hour Software by Skrommel.

 :) Updated DeskLock to v1.1.

Just added options to lock more classes and to show what class the mouse is hovering over.

Each object has a class associated with it that AutoHotKey can use to identify the kind of object is. I'd guess if you have shortcuts and things like MyComputer, folders and Prog.EXE on the dektop they will have different class types so to lock everything you would need to delect all the likely classes to be found on a desktop.

:) If you check Show Info in DeskLock, the class of the window under the mouse is shown. The desktop has the class Progman, the taskbar has the class Shell_TrayWnd.

These classes can be added to the Classes to lock, separated by comma.

It's just if you want to stop your toddler from dragging other buttons on your system, like the taskbar.

Awesome! Is there a way to make it so that you can enable/disable the program via a hotkey?

 :tellme: Uploaded DeskLock v1.2!

I've added a disable hotkey, since this also disables the disable hotkey...

Is there a way to make this hotkey global so that I can re-enable desklock with it after the program has been disabled? Thanks again man!

Cool, when you do that, can you add a way to save the current desktop icon layout and restore it at a later time? A preferred way of handling this would be to store the icon layouts in .dtl (or whatever file ext you choose) files, that way you can save different layouts under different names. What do you think? This would be a life saver for me since this program already works so well at preventing icons from being moved around, but if a rogue app does move them or windows decides to restore them, I can quickly restore them to their original layout. Let me know man. Thanks!

Hey skrommel, just wanted to see if you were up for the above challenge of saving and restoring icon layouts so that if some rogue app resizes my desktop and messes the icon positions up, i can restore quickly :) Let me know and thanks!

skrommel, desklock is exactly what I'm looking for! Could you please add a way to enable it via the hotkey. Now it will disable only

Nice work, Skrommel.

To prevent dragging of Desktop icons on Windows 8/8.1, you need to manually add the "WorkerW" class. Perhaps you can update your code so that DeskLock.ini includes that class by default.

Also, it would be great if you could change the hotkey function so that it toggles between enabled/disabled, rather than just disable.
