Avatar Ambiguity
« on: November 06, 2010, 06:25 PM »

Is it just me...

I have *looked* at this avatar (top-center) of a long-time member (who I will let remain anonymous) of DC for a long time.  What I thought I saw over the years was...

  •   A Jet lifting off from a runway heading away from your position.  (I saw this for a long time, probably because I am an aviation enthusiast nut!)

Others in my family thought it was a...
  • A whale breaching
  • A duck on the water.

Recently I finally *saw* what it was before my eyes...
Please don't click until you take your guess...
A close up of barbs on a bared-wire fence strand touched by Jack Frost!

Am I the only one?

My guess was steam venting, (from a geyser, volcano, etc), being reflected in a body of water.

But after looking at your last guess and re-evaluating my eyesight: I concur with you.

Which means we're probably both wrong. ;)

Yep, I think you're right (in your spoiler).

Previously I had thought it was dust/smoke flying into the air due to some impact or explosion.

My thought was similar, but I thought it was clouds reflecting in a lake.

@CodeTRUCKER - I think your spoiler is right after looking at it again. Good eye. That was hard to see.

Thanks for the flowers!  It only took me a little over three years to see it!

Why are you keeping Jibz anonymous? :P

I believe your spoiler is correct; it's what I've perceived it to be all along. Probably because it wasn't an uncommon sight in the area I used to walk our dog around where my mum used to live :)

I always assumed it was a knot tied in a piece of cotton rope. However, now that that you've given me a reason to look at it more closely, I think you're analysis (in the spoiler) is correct

I'm reluctant to admit that I have such a morbid mind, but your hidden idea was the first and only thing that occurred to me.  :o  The only thing that was different was that I didn't think about frost.

Like everyone else, now that I look again, I concur.  However, my first thought and one I didn't look much further into was that it was a picture of a bullet going through a water tank like they use for identifying a bullet signature.  No, there is no particular reason for this, I am not a shooting nut or anything, just that is what it looked like to me.

I would have always thought it was frost on barbed wire.

I totally missed this thread :-[.

I am flattered some people actually noticed my avatar and thought about what it is, and you are right it is barb wire with frost on it.

It is a picture I took back in 2003 on a crisp winter morning where it seemed like the entire world had been covered in ice.

winter.jpg

I loved the colors and the contrast in the very sharp frosted wire and the blurry background, so I started using it as an avatar on forums .

Great photo, jibz  Thank you for sharing a larger version with us and for clarifying the mystery.

BTW the picture would make a great wallpaper, too.

Awesome photo Jibz!

Nioce that you have clarified, however I was just starting to think it was some type of water based aircraft coming into land, and the white was the spray.

@Jibz - Obviously I liked it, even if it isn't a jet taking off in the fog with atmospheric moisture compression off the wings and rudder. <snicker>  All kidding aside, it is a serendipitously beautiful photo!

Ok, in the interest of removing any ambiguity, I think it would be appropriate for everyone to "open our eyes" to the verity of your avatar (if it is not your own visage).

TBH, I dont even know what mine is, I think it was some sort of wierd drawing of a lion, tiger, or possibly dog, with green stuff coming out of it (Perhaps an alien animal thats bleeding or somehting...who knows?)
