@apankrat: thanks for your reply :)
But it doesn´t work.

My file listing is as follows:
.bmx          <DIR>
SomeOtherDir    <DIR>
file1.bmx
file2.bmx
file3.bmx

I set the filters as you wrote but it ignores the rule for the ".bmx" folder. For now I stick with it by entering the .bmx folder into the "location" field and let it exclude *.* of the content of the dir. I then just have an empty ".bmx" dir on my backup drive.

Could you show make a capture of the exclusion window and post it here ?

Hello
I have been using DSynchronize for over 2 years and just discovered Bvckup.

What I like :
- reliability (DSynchonize does only monitor changes but assumes all is already synchronized, which is not always true, and sometimes stopped to work without apparent reason)
- small cpu usage when syncing
- separated interval setting for each backuped place
- readability of the GUI

What I dislike :
- DSynchronize was able to start as a service (without GUI) and didn't use more than 2 or 3 MB of memory (about 100Go of data to monitor in numerous places) while Bvckup uses about 90-100MB to monitor the same places.

Very good work; if you could reduce memory usage, it would be near perfect.

Let me test this exact setup and get back to you tomorrow. Looks like a bug to me.

Alright, so there appears to be a bug in filtering logic and I am going to track it down next.

There is a workaround for your case though and it is as simple as deleting the second filter, i.e. just keep the "exclude .bmx".

Got some work done on further improving copying speed - both bulk and delta copying. Also added special handling of empty files (like locks, lingering temps and such) - speed improvement is 5-fold.

I've been using SpiderOak to synchronize game save files between computers, and recently had the brilliant idea of using it to sync my Minecraft saves. Unfortunately SpiderOak uses up way too much CPU and slows my system (and Minecraft) to a crawl because it syncs while in the game.

Well, obviously I can't use bvckup to sync between computers, but I did just test it out backing up Minecraft saves/worlds and am happy to report that it didn't cause the game to run sluggish, and it didn't seem to affect my system speed at all.

Yesterday I started playing Minecraft again and I generated a new world and Bvckup started slowing my system down much worse than SpiderOak ever did. So I guess I'm not using Bvckup to backup Minecraft data anymore.

@Deozaan - Bvckup runs all its copying activity at lowered CPU priority, meaning that it yields to other programs that need CPU. The slowdown you saw most likely meant that Minecraft was saturating CPU on its own, so there was virtually no CPU time left for anything else. I am not familiar with SpiderOak, but Bvckup does need some CPU time to generate supporting data for servicing delta copying later on. I am also guessing that generating new world translates into creating large amount of data, which in turn means lots of things to copy during the initial backup. The incremental (delta) updates afterwards should be fairly painless as per your previous experience.

I just generated a new world in Minecraft again with Bvckup running and everything went very smoothly, so there must have been something else going on last time.

If anyone's interested, here's a summary of changes for the next version (scheduled for Jan '11) -
http://www.bvckup.co...opic_show.pl?tid=157

Let me know if this works, if it doesn't... or if it doesn't matter :-)

Thanks for the feedback. I like what I read.
There seems to be some nifty little twists in there...   :)
Web site page looks great too! On small laptop screen, maybe a bit wide...? Wonder how other feel about that.

I also find the front page (website) is too wide, I have to scroll H to see it all, and the click on the features button gives no effect (latest Opera build).

Edited :  :-[ ; pretty normal for a sketch !  I however maintain my remark on the page being too wide.

It's a bit wide, because it's an image :) The width of the central part is standard 960px.

LOL. Welcome to the club :) There was an excellent practical joke when one would take a screenshot of a bare Windows desktop with a lone Minesweeper window on it, then set it as a wallpaper and observe the victim going nuts trying to close that window. Worked every time.

Bump.

I have started the work on Version 2 of Bvckup. Please forward yourself to this post for the list of features (neatly arranged for your convenience into three piles from sysadmin-boring to nerdy-cool) - http://bvckup.com/blog/version-2-in-broad-strokes

Also, while I have you here, may I also persuade you to have a look at this marvelous blog footer? I (rather unwisely) spent almost 6 weeks of my time on it, but I think it's my best design work to date. Gotta learn the ropes, you know... pretty and functional beats just functional :)

In any case, if you guys have any thoughts on the feature set, nothing is set in stone just yet and I am all ears.

Great feature list. And... great Blog ! (I told you that already in your forum, but it deserves to be said again. :))

The Pipelined IO is intriguing. I can't wait to test V2 -- there seems to be lots of imagination, intelligence, care and effort in there!

BTW : does the File and directory move detection also mean... File and directory renaming detection?

Yes, it does. Modified the post to reflect that.

I just put Bvckup on my Netbook and ran into a (frustratingly) frequent problem with running software on a Netbook: Some of the option screens are too tall for my limited resolution (1024x600) so I can't access the options that go off the bottom of the screen.

Please fix this.
