STEAM: Left 4 Dead & Left 4 Dead 2 - US$10.19 for both

4wd:
As per the subject - Midweek Madness sale.  I'm thinking of seriously whipping out the credit card here, however I have one question for which I can't seem to find an answer.

Can you play Steam games in a multi-player LAN environment without having to be connected to the internet?

eg.  If I take my PC to our LAN night and the others were running a L4D2 multi-player game, would I be able to join if I'm using a Steam based version of L4D2 and had no internet access for validation.

Or are Steam games purely single player if there is no internet connection?

lanux128:
there's a big discount due to the release of the new DLC, the Sacrifice. gotta love Valve for that, free contents and a discount. :)

i've never tried this due but according to official support, this can be done, you have to validate your games once (by being online). then you can set to 'offline mode' and exit. so the next time you start the client you can play single-player or LAN.

• Offline Mode
• Setting Steam to run at LAN events

I've played TF2 at LAN Parties before, so it's doable.  Everyone has to be on the same versions- it's best to patch your games, then set to offline right before going to the LAN location.
