Lord of the Rings Online going free..
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:08 PM »
i don't play much MMORPG but there are always temptations abound such as this maximumpc report. :)

Sauron, you might want to grow another gigantic, flaming eyeball to watch your back, because you're about to make a bunch of brand new enemies. Why? Because this fall, anyone and everyone – graphics cards willing – will be able to play Lord of the Rings Online for the same price as developer Turbine's other wildly successful MMO, Dungeons & Dragons Online. Which is to say: absolutely nothing.

I used to really like the idea of an MMO, but then I realized what I really want is the ability to play multiplayer (co-op, generally) with friends locally and online.

I don't want random strangers running around acting like idiots. I could go get some sunshine if I wanted that. :D

yes, same here.. over time, i found that i preferred coop gameplay over PvP in most of the online games. in fact, some of the PvP are becoming much of a twitch-fest. :)

Nice to see I am not the only one who likes co-op play.  I have never been much of a PvP player online or off.  Maybe occasionally with friends, but not in general.

I can't speak for the actual community since I didn't play the game but from the replies I saw LOTRO was unanimously heralded as having a dedicated community who sticks true to the lore of the franchise.

The bigger issue was end-game. That said, I don't know how the Free to Play has affected the community because I didn't even play the game at all but just saying, from the comments around the net, it doesn't have the reputation of WoW.

And as usual Codemasters were not prepared.
There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who have friends.

I play DDO with my sons.  If this is anything like it, I am excited.

Just a note for those expecting f2p for a long time, you'll be disappointend.
You will only be able to level to somewhere early twenties before running out of quests and will have to buy new quests pack.
You can grind mobs though if that is what you want.
Basically you will have to spend money if you intend to enjoy and play the game for more than a week or two.

My mains are: Galthaladan, Daevereth, and Aglaring.  I have others, but I'm liable to be on one of those at some point...

Then you're not a free player but paying to play.
If you expect to play as a non paying member what I wrote is true.

Eh... what?  I was just showing the chart.  One level of that is free to play... and it does have limitations.  Rather than promoting the FUD, I was giving a concrete showing of the limitations...

It is fun and a bit easy, but the control system is awkward at best.  I prefer the DDO control system.

Heh... I actually prefer LOTRO's system.  The main attack functions of DDO are RSI inducing at best...  and don't get me into the part about realizing how/if your feats have gone off...

apart from download size, what's the difference between the high res and standard res download version? has anyone played the high res version for the "ultimate graphical experience"?

There is definitely a big difference between the high-res and standard-res textures.
