Sitepoint is giving away a free ebook
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:10 PM »
In honor of the World Cup, Sitepoint is running their own cup, letting the teams from the World Cup determine the prices of their books.

They have assigned teams a book, and offered discounts on those books, increasing the discounts as teams won and eliminating the books (return to regular price) as teams lost.

So right now you can either get a 83% discount on the last 2 remaining teams/books ($4.95 each), or you can wait to see who wins and take advantage of a one day only special by grabbing a free book.

It's down to Simply Javascript (Netherlands) vs jQuery (Spain).

I don't watch the World Cup. How long before the winner is announced?

I think they just want to give away jQuery. Everyone knows Spain is going to win. ;)

That's what I am hoping...got a friend that could really use that jQuery book.

I've read a couple of chapters from Simply Javascript (they were giving away two chapters as a PDF download a while back, it might be worth investigating if they still are), and from what I've seen it is a fantastic book for today's Javascript beginner, a necessary update to the pile of now-worthless Javascript books that popped up during the document.writeln era.

So does this mean the books are on are sale until they are eliminated, or does it mean when there is a winner, there is a sale? (EDIT: Never mind, I read the first post, and I see it is a little of both. And a freebie! :) )

The two chapters are still available (as always, this is how they reel you in).  It says on the site they are available at the discount until they are knocked out of the running.  So if you want this one and believe Spain will win, rather jQuery will win  :P,  then you will want to buy it now while it is 83% off ($4.95 USD).  Note, however, this is ONLY for the PDF versions.  IF you want a hardcopy, you will either need to print it yourself (if it is not prohibited) or pay the full price for the book.

Note, either jQuery or Simply JavaScript will be available free on the 11/12th of July for 24 hours.  So if you are a gambler, wait until then to pick up jQuery since Spain is going to win.

(Deo said it, not me!  :P )

Thanks for the heads up App, I already bought Simply JavaScript.  At that price it is hard to pass up.

I didn't want to spoil it for people who put it on their TiVo. It's only 3PM where I am, so other people are at work or church or maybe away for the weekend.

Of course, Soccer is so boring they might as well just skip to the last 15 minutes anyway. ;)

They are not too fast with updating their site, I'm afraid.

And ah well, it was fun as long as it lasted (as I am From Dutch origine)...but 'viva españa'? Never!

It's up now. Go get it, and don't forget to download the code that goes with it from here: http://www.sitepoint...oks/jquery1/code.php

They will give you a bit of a fuss, saying your email address is not on file. Use the alternate method they present after that and enter the word from the book they ask for, your email address, and select where you "bought" it from (sitepoint.com)

They will then email you a link to download the code, like they did with the book.

Sure you would, just not right away. The link for the code is in the book, as a footnote, on one of the pages.

The tips for getting around the fact they are not keeping a record of your download as a purchase, isn't in the book, though.

I keep getting the code word you entered is wrong. It's the bolded letters right?

You have to look in the book you downloaded and find the word they are asking for. It's not on the website or in the original email they sent you.

Yeah I'm in the:

Code Word:
Purchased from:
Country:

Section.

I put in the code word as written above in bolded letters and Sitepoint.com as purchased from.

Edit: Oh wait, I get it now. Look in the actual book. Ok.

Not that I can tell, and you can print it and all.

That's disappointing. More than 24 hours after submitting my e-mail address to them, the offer is over and my link never arrived.

Good thing I didn't pay for it.

I contacted @sitepointdotcom on Twitter and whoever is running that told me the e-mails were sent out almost immediately and that I should check my spam folder. After informing him that I have checked my spam folder multiple times and submitted my e-mail address to them multiple times for the offer and still no e-mail, he said he would help me in a Direct Message if I added to his popularity by "following" him on Twitter.

Yeah right. ::) Only Steve Jobs can get away with that. Or not.

Amazing how what should be great positive publicity for Sitepoint is revealing to me how much I never want to give them a penny.

EDIT: I feel like an idiot. :-[ :-[

Deozaan, he can't direct message you unless you follow him. (twitter's rules, not his) What harm could it cause to follow him only long enough to get the issue resolved? Or would you rather send him your email address out in the open where everyone on twitter can see it?
