<EDIT> I was able to get my download manager to work with SourceForge.</EDIT>

In long: Ah, good old open source applications! Nothing like some great free software to put on your PC. But what if you have connection issues and can't stay online long enough to complete that download?

Good thing you've got FreeDownloadManager(.org!)

But wait! What's this? SourceForge uses some trickery so that the download starts automatically in the browser.

Ah, no problem. Just cancel the download and copy the direct link they so kindly provide and paste it into FDM.

What the heck? 20kB? The file should be 40MB! Argh! The Direct link is just a link to a script that chooses a mirror and forwards you to the download!

In short: How the smurf do you use a download manager on SourceForge?

+1 DTA gives you the most flexibility. Great add-on.  :-*

If you don't want to use DTA, you can still get FDM to work.

First, check your FDM monitoring settings to make sure the ALT must be pressed checkbox is enabled:

AA01.gifSourceForge

Then, after you hit cancel on Sourceforge, hold down the ALT key and click on the direct link. FDM's Add download box should pop open and you can take it from there.

Luck!

I use Google Chrome so I don't think DTA! is not an option.

First, check your FDM monitoring settings to make sure the ALT must be pressed checkbox is enabled:

I was never able to figure out the FDM monitor settings for Chrome because I couldn't ever find Chrome's install directory. But since I last tried I found out it was somewhere in the Users directory and so I found it this time and have properly configured FDM to work with Chrome now. Thanks for prompting me to look into that again!

Out of curiosity I had a unix shell handy so I put a sourceforge download link into wget, here's the output:

wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/files/clamwin/0.96.1/clamwin-0.96.1-setup.exe/download?use_mirror=autoselect

These days I would have figured most download managers would be capable of handling redirects, maybe what going on behind the scenes is more complicated though.

As a workaround however, from reading the above it'd be easy to manually translate a SF.net link to the actual file URL on the mirror.

I use Flashgot with Internet Download Accelerator in Firefox & it seems to work very well with getting things downloaded from SourceForge.
