today's giveaway is the well-known optical drive emulator, Daemon Tools. though, i'm not sure why there are both - Pro & Standard tag.

maybe a couple of hours too early... most of the first posts at GAOTD quote this:

” Activation attempt was rejected License acivation attempt was rejected due to frequent activation tries. To resolve this issue please contact: Disc Soft Ltd “

i'm not sure why there are both - Pro & Standard tag.

The "Pro" version has both an Advanced and Standard variant: http://www.daemon-to...eng/products/compare

I think the main difference is that Advanced supports 'IDE drive emulation' which apparently is able to hide from copy protection schemes a bit better than the more usual SCSI drive emulation (I don't really know - I'm not a gamer and only very rarely have to deal with any kind of disc-based protection).

Some of these companies are going overboard with their application version names.  Pro, Pro Standard, Pro Extended, ultimate, Home, Standard...it's ridiculous.  I feel it's like advertising...they want to confuse you on purpose.

The comments for the software note conflicts with anti-virus software. They seem to imply that the software cannot run in the presence of some AV packages. However, my logic tells me that it's probably only a problem during installation.

Does anybody actually know?

One thing I've always found troubling about this type of offer is that you have X time perion to download, install, and activate. So if one was to need to reinstall said application (say...) 6 months from now, they're hosed? Or can/will/does the key work again after the fact?

Thanks for pointing this out, lanux!

I think it depends on the application. But generally I'd say you're hosed, or else how would they stop anyone else from just sharing the file and installing it after the giveaway? Specifically with Daemon Tools Pro Standard, the key was "built into" the installer and it is probably the same key for everyone who got it from the giveaway, and my guess is that it will become invalid very soon (when the offer ends).

Much as I'd feared, thanks.

Deo is right about depending on the app.  I have some I downloaded and saved keys (and in some cases installers) that work great, some not so well.  But remember, GAOTD's business proposition is an advertisement for the software - we (the software developer) give you an unlimited trial time (usually without feature restrictions, though I have seen this abused), but if you want to upgrade or reinstall, you must buy the software.

For most people, the free Daemon Tools Lite is sufficient.

For the record, I have never have experienced a conflict with any AV I have ever run. I strongly suspect PEBCAK.
