Kaspersky silently blocking any URL containing certain words?
(1/1)
Jibz:
I ran into an odd problem this morning that I thought I'd share here.
I wanted to download the AM-DeadLink tool because I had some links to check, but when I googled the name to find the site I ended up with a blank page.
Oh well, I'll just go to www.aignes.com and access it from there I thought, went there and selected AM-DeadLink in the top menu .. blank page. Hmmmmm.
I googled "am dead link" which worked (yay!), and chose the snapfiles.com link .. blank page. The softpedia.com link .. blank page. The cnet.com link .. blank page .
I figured maybe NoScript was being overly zealous, so I tried in internet explorer .. blank pages.
Then it dawned on me .. I tried disabling Kaspersky Internet Security, and lo and behold, all of a sudden it all worked.
So it would seem Kaspersky is silently blocking any URL containing the word "deadlink" from being loaded. A google came up with this forum post http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t150990.html describing a similar problem.
I am certain there is some good reason for it, maybe some evil exploit is using an URL containing that word, but it's a bit like a false positive only worse, since there is no warning, and it is effectively keeping some people from getting to a software developers tool, AM-DeadLink.
Innuendo:
That is very odd. But Kaspersky has a history doing things like that from time to time.
I know it's no solution to your problem, but that blank page behavior is not present with Outpost Security Suite active.

It could at least give a "page blocked" warning :-s
I wonder if it's a feature or a bug, though? Perhaps it could be a problem with certain webservers, like some combination of HTTP pipelining + gzip or whatever?
