Any (Free) VPN service to recommend?
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:50 PM »
Hi!

Say someone can connect over a internet cafè provided Wi-Fi, but don't fully trust the connection, fearing that there may be sniffers around.

Is there any (preferably) free VPN service that can be used on the fly to make a secure connection?
Speed would not be important at all - just usable would be OK.

Thanks!

For me, a SSH tunnel to a $5/mo VPS proved more than enough.
I have used both Burst.NET and VPSVille with great success.

TeamViewer is free for personal use and can act as a VPN via client software or via a browser. The connection is secure.

you might want to take a look at Hamachi
I've used it some in the past to play some lan games with my friend while he was at his house, and I was at my house, and it worked perfectly.

And from their features page:
Encrypted communications. Secure communications using AES 256-bit encryption, over public and private networks.

Depending on what you want, I'd recommend iPredator. Does it have issues? Yes. However, it's still on the renegade side of privacy, which is a good thing. I posted some stuff about it here:

YMMV.

Hope it helps some.

(That's the VPN I use for most things.)

I'd recommend you trying kebrum.com. Two simultaneous connections from one account is just one of its features, it's really cheap also.

After using a few different free VPNs for the odd time I use one, I've settled on TunnelBear.

Very easy, free, 500MB/month (tweet them for an extra 1GB/month if you need it), and easy switch between a UK or USA exit.

Allows me to grab all the BBC shows from their website, (you don't need a UK IP for the download, just need it to get the initial link).

Again, not free, but I've tried out Privacy.io, and it's pretty good. They don't keep logs and they allow port 25.

I've been using Witopia since six months. The prices were just too good to be true... $40 for a year PPTP VPN with unlimited transfer sounds unreal. So I just tried them, hoping the connection speed would be useful enough. But hey... servers in Europe even max out my connection. Impressive. Since 6 months no issues.

@wr975

What i-net connection do you have (xx MBit downstream)?

Would you be so kind to provide a few speedtests? European servers would be sufficient.

@wr975

Thanks a lot.

I'm using HMA (via OpenVPN) atm and even servers in my own country cap my downloadspeed to approx. half of my max download speed (in this case 8mbit). New York is even worse, I can't get more than 2 mbit at max.

Don't know if it makes any difference (256bit (OpenVPN) vs. 128bit (PPTP) encryption strength) though.

Maybe it's time for a change (although I don't like annual payments)...

Locking this topic as it seems to just attract spam.
