IDEA: DNS director
« on: May 03, 2010, 09:56 AM »
A local dns server that will  forward short names (myserver) and a list of long names (myserver.dnsname.local, myserver.otherdns.local) to one dns server and everything else to an alternate dns server like opendns or google dns.

Probably easiest to simply edit your machine's hosts file, unless you have a lot of machine on your LAN you want to do this for.

If you're at that scale, I suppose you could afford setting up a linux machine to handle the task? dnsmasq would probably handle the job pretty well.

By short names, do you mean the NetBIOS names? If you want to prevent that from doing broadcast resolution you would need to set the node type in DHCP and/or setup a WINS server.

The MS DNS server will happily handle multiple domains (just setup a zone for the ones you want it to handle) and forwarding of other (external) domains to external DNS. But (to get the zone type correct) it would be best to know more about why you have multiple domains and what if anything they are seperated by.

Are they all parent domains, or are some child domains?

Are they all in the same forest?

Is this a LAN, WAN, MAN, or VPN based network?

Am I correct in assuming this is a Windows network...?

looking for something to run on the workstation side.
Our Organization blocks the web with DNS re-direction, but allows external DNS server access.  So I end up switching DNS servers through the day.

Oh. ...We're not really here to assist you in hacking your companies network (Admins tend to block things for reasons).

Actually I am one of the senior adminstrators, :)  I just did not want to put up a VM with a server on it for a few people.
