Crash on XP Pro SP3
« on: March 09, 2010, 05:09 PM »
DcUpdater has been crashing recently.  I can get it to happen when I run it manually every 1 out of 3-5 times I run it.

The attached screenshot shows the threads view in ProcExp after it crashed and I suspended it, in case that's any help in debugging this.

Here's what the crash dialog had to say.  Although the version says 1.0.0.0 here, the about dialog says I'm running the latest version (1.26.01)

that sounds very frustrating.. maybe we can talk via email -- if its crashing that often you may be invaluable to me as a beta tester so i can see if i can reproduce the problem.  can you email me at [email protected]?

This is reproducing here also (same OS, same version, same crash).

The crashes started after the last DcUpdater update (maybe the windows 7 crashes fixes broke something for XP?).
The crashes occur especially after startup.

That's the problem I am having too. That's the only time it crashes for me.

sounds like the problem may happen when there is an error connecting to the network.

For me, it does not happen only at startup. I have opened the PC a few hours ago, and if I start the DcUpdater program, most of the times it will work, but a few times it crashes with a pop-up window appearing, as jaden has described, or, in other cases, it just closes, with no warning.

The same here. I never switch my PC off and every couple of days I find DcUpdater crashed in the morning with the standard Windows dialog. So far this never happened when started manually. How could I help?

(Win XP Pro, SP3, permanent ADSL connection)

I'm on a LAN and haven't noticed any connectivity issues.  I do use an openVPN connection so I can access another datacenter.  Could that be related?  Maybe a routing problem?

I've also seen a slightly different crash while manually starting and stopping it in order to provoke the issue.

I'm watching the process with Sysinternals' Process Monitor to compare successful runs and crashes.  I have 3 apps to check for updates.

On a successful run it creates 8 threads and has 3 TCP send/receive/disconnects in this order: SRSRSRDDD (S=Send, R=Receive, D=Disconnect).  5 threads exit, then the process exits.

On the first crash I reported, 8 threads are created and there are 2 TCP send/receives but no disconnects (Order: SRSR).  No threads exit.  That appears to indicate it's crashing in the network connectivity code.

On the second crash, 8 threads are created, and 2 TCP send/receive/disconnects occur.  (Order: SRSRDD).  No threads exit.  The order is odd, because the third connection doesn't appear, even though the other two are disconnected.  I'm not sure where the crash is happening to explain that order.

Let me know if there's any info I can provide to help diagnose this.

On a whim I tried using the latest version of libcurl.dll (7.20.0).  It crashed every time :eusa_dance:

Any news on this issue? Or maybe it does not deserve a fix?

I can run it manually without error, but I get the same "Application Error" popup every morning from when it runs overnight.  My DC apps are all in pretty good shape, so uninstalling the updater for a while.

rather than uninstalling -- FARR is the one telling it to run overnight -- so just go into far and tell it not to autocheck.
i'll try to figure out the problem.

I'll have to chime in on this one as well. DcUpdater crashes in almost all situation. I have been able to get to run inside of FRR2, but will crash when actually performing an update.

Am experiencing the same problem as stated here. My OP system is XP. When I run DCUpdater Windows confirms there is a problem and must shut down. The notes contained in this error window show DCUpdater Version 1.0.0.0 but I am running the latest version 1.26.0.1. There is reference in the error report to appcompat.txt. What have noticed is the following - if you do not shut down but move the error window to one side. After this cancel the update and repeat the update. This time the update progress confirming the latest versions of URSnooper2 and DCUpdater are installed and no updates are available.

To try and resolve the problem I uninstalled DCUpdater and removed all entries in the registry. I then reinstalled but the problem remains. There is clearly a problem with the software. Hope this is fixed please

Thank you

It's been crashing for me, too, for quite a long time.  Finally thought I would investigate, and found this thread.

I'm a software developer and can help with beta testing if necessary.

I'm running XP with all the latest updates.  The only DonationCoder app I use regularly is FARR v2.87.03.

For the records: I have the crash as well. Not after every start, but quite often. Just had it now.

The problem seems to have vanished. I haven't experienced the last 5-6 times i used the updater. I don't know if it previously have been interfered by my NIS 2010 Security suite. But no problems thus far.
