One thing I've noticed about several of the images posted in this thread is the areas of complete transparency within the boundaries of the background - especially around the centre-button position.

In designing backgrounds, you should bear the following in mind:

(1) Not everyone will have an image for the centre-button - though most will.
(2) You should allow for the fact that the centre-button can have a variable size. Taking this and the preceding point together, the background looks best where there is no defined centre-button area.
(3) There should be no areas of 100% transparency within the boundaries of the background, Areas you want to appear transparent should actually have 1% opacity: this is not sufficient as to be noticeable to the naked eye but will prevent undesirable side-effects as the mouse traverses the areas of transparency.
(4) A background is simply that, a background, and the best ones don't detract from whatever is going on in the foreground.

Question: May I have your permission to utilize your screen shots as examples for Circle Dock???
These would be utilized on the wikidot home page, and for advertising purposes

Let me know at your convenience

My first contribution. I aimed for it to look fairly different over black or white backgrounds, so look at it on both. I normally run a black desktop so the effect is very pronounced when the image is partially over black and partially over a white window.

The image is centered but is asymmetrical, so what looks like the focus or "center" of the graphic is up and to the right of where the center button is. That is on purpose, the bottom and left legs are longer then the right. If someone wants a copy of this with the focal point of the image in the middle I can do that also.

O and note that it already has some transparency built in. There is a solid black background of 1% opacity then the rest of the image is at around 90% opacity.

The image is just a Gimp flame fractal using a black to 70% alpha white gradient with the center gradient point favoring darker shades.
