Batch photo filter software?
« on: December 29, 2009, 04:15 AM »
Hi folks, having just spent the last 2-3 days scanning 1800 slides I am in need of some software, (preferably free), to automate the next process.

All(?!) that is required is the ability to batch run a Photoshop compatible filter, (Polaroid's Dust & Scratch), over all the images and save to JPG output from TIFF input.

While I'd lose some quality over the final output compared to running the standalone version of the filter, I don't mind because this is purely a BTN archival purpose.

Sounds simple but the programs I've tried don't seem work too well handling 8bf filters externally.  Most either don't work at all or don't support 8bf filters in their batch commands.

eg.
XNView - Becomes unresponsive and doesn't handle 8bf in batch commands.
Image Analayzer - Same as XNView.
GIMP - Couldn't even work out how to use it on the image, (image processing software isn't a high priority function of my existance).
Paint.com - Mentioned in a DC thread, it did work but can't do batch processing.
IrfanView - Same as XNView.

I don't particularly want to learn Photoshop's wierd and wonderful way of doing things, (nor do a massive download just to see if it'll do it), since I'll likely never use it again.

So, anyone have any suggestions?

Or if anyone knows of a freeware image processor that can do Dust & Scratch removal as good as Polaroid's I'll be happy with that too :)

Photofiltre, Photofiltre Studio or Infranview might work.
Finding the filter is the challenge.
And if it will batch process.

But I think both can use photoshop filters.
Or Harry's filters might work as well.

Some sites with the 8bf filters will have spyware or worse.
Be sure to have your defense up.

8bfw is the file extension of photoshop filters*
Other image editing programmes started using them as well.

I've seen other related formats, e.g. 8bs, also used by P'shop

*AFAIK there is now a newer format as well (?). I still work with photoshop 5.5 so I wouldnt know ;-)

Photofiltre, Photofiltre Studio or Infranview might work.

Already have the filter, Polaroid Dust & Scratch Remover, the installer provides a standalone and 8bf for Photoshop or something that'll use them.

As per my first post, IrfanView just went unresponsive - note not 'Not Responding' according to Task Manager, just didn't respond to any input.
With Photofiltre, which I use for image touchup along with XNView, I couldn't find where to tell it to use the 8bf filter and the site doesn't mention whether either Photofiltre or Photofiltre Studio can even use them.

Or Harry's filters might work as well.

Haven't tried Harry's filters yet, (installed with XNView), because Polaroid's DSR generally gave a better result compared to other denoising methods with a minimum of effort.

EDIT: Here's a mini-review and download link to PDSR, (down the bottom of the article), since it's now impossible, (or just very hard), to find on Polaroid's website.

Yeah, sorry I missed that you said InfranView.

In PhotoFiltre Studio put the plugin in the plugin folder,
program files-photofiltre-plugins.
Then in the program go to Tools - Preferences.
There is a drop down bar to choose plugins and 8bf.
Maybe you can make it work that way.
I haven't tried it, this is guessing for sure.

quote from IrfanView:

Available PlugIns and current versions:

    * 8BF_Filters - (version 3.97): allows IrfanView to load Adobe Photoshop 8BF filters.
Note: some older/special 8BFs may require additional system DLLs:
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Msvcrt10.dll
      Plugin.dll
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can download these DLLs here:
      http://irfanview.tuw...lugins/8bf_tools.zip
(check "Readme.txt" for instructions and install!)

Nice Curt, Ill check that out!

Here's a link from Infranview's site that may help as well.

Good suggestion Curt, however IrfanView still didn't work after installing the dlls, again becoming unresponsive.

Personally I didn't think it would because although the 2 dlls are not on my system, both the standalone PDSR and Paint.com, (using the 8bf), worked fine.

ATM, after looking through the slides I've discovered that I may not need to run the filter over all of them, (maybe only about 40%), because the texturing in some of the slides obscures any dust/scratch marks.

So I'm currently just running the standalone PDSR over each affected slide which allows for a greater measure of control since I can mark which area to filter, (using the plugin it would have been the whole image by default).

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wonder if XnView and IrfanView are actually doing things but don't have a mechanism to show work/progress when running external filters. Is there any CPU activity when it freezes?

CPU hits about 10% when it's first initialised but then drops to 0% after a few seconds.  The Select and Use filter dialog doesn't close, the whole program just becomes unresponsive.

Like they're waiting for a result signal back from the filter but not getting it.

Whereas, RealWorld Paint.COM runs the filter, CPU load hits about 30%, and returns with the modified image a minute later.

Already tried, see first post - it doesn't work with this filter.

here's the filter or program
it's not anywhere current that i could find

http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.polaroid.com/service/software/poladsr/pdsr1_0.exe

copy - paste the whole line to get to the listings

--------------

this program takes a while to download
is now free, was $60, but it could be obtained even then for free at times

the site's links are slow to load, figure they backshelved it
but it's still there and i did read that it can handle the filter
maybe, maybe not  ???
good luck, it takes a while to install if you want to try

Whenever I hear "batch" and "photo" (or "image") I think of Imagemagick. I have used it myself very often and generally was quite satisfied with the results.

For improved user experience there is Phatch which provides a GUI. I have not used phatch yet though; however, it is intriguing.

I ended up just working through them using the stand-alone version of the Polaroid Dust & Scratch Removal filter.  It gave me more control over which areas to process and I could also choose to only process the images that needed it, ie. I didn't bother doing any where the dust marks appears in a forest of dead trees, gravel, etc - depends on the background texture.

It actually ends up not taking too much time, even though I haven't finished yet, since I only do 20-50 at a time whenever I'm not doing too much else; I'm about half way through.

I saw that but didn't think of using it for this because the version they're offering doesn't support 8bf filters.

I completely forgot about ImageMagick  :-[

Yes, that looks interesting; unfortunately it doesn't seem to support 8bf filters.

The only programs that I know of, that support PS plugins (8bf filters) for batch processing are, of course photoshop, and PhotoPerfect or its original German version FixFoto.

You might try ThePluginSite. Here's a link to much of the Free stuff, but it's a big site  covering most everything "Plug-in".

< http://thepluginsite...reeplugins/index.htm >. And it's a CLEAN site.

PhotoFiltre Studio handles .8bf filters, but  the Free version "PhotoFiltre" does not..
Photo Brush by Mediachance.com also handles all .8bf filters.

Yes, ...... but there is a huge difference between "handling .8bf flters" (about 30  or more programs will do this) and applying PS plugins to a batch of 1800 pictures.  Few people would want to do this via the usual plugin interface one by one as it would be required by PhotoFiltre or by PhotoBrush.  ;)
Anyhow, the OP has solved his problem already.

Yes - it's a really old thread but hey, I started it  :D

Anyway, I finally finished doing all my slides, (yes, I am slow), and I thought I might share an example of what PolaDSR can do:

Before:
12-27-2009_144-before.jpgBatch photo filter software?

During:
2012-11-02_10-53-59.jpgBatch photo filter software?

After:
12-27-2009_144-after.jpgBatch photo filter software?

The before and after photo are scaled 50%, the filter would have removed the rigging from the yachts so they were masked out.

PolaDSR is attached as it's a little hard to find now - it's free and hasn't been in development since 2002.
