Locate32 and Everything both builds databases to search from, which are pretty instant. And of course there's DonationCoder.com's Find And Run Robot that searches windows very fast and has a bunch of useful options and plugins.

I'm using the stand alone SearchMyFiles from NirSoft. Little and quick.

Quote
It allows you to easily search files in your system by wildcard, by last modified/created/last accessed time, by file attributes, by file content (text or binary search), and by the file size. SearchMyFiles allows you to make a very accurate search that cannot be done with Windows search. For Example: You can search all files created in the last 10 minutes with size between 500 and 700 bytes.
After you made a search, you can select one or more files, and save the list into text/html/csv/xml file, or copy the list to the clipboard.
SearchMyFiles is portable, and you can use it from a USB flash drive without leaving traces in the Registry of the scanned computer.

first make sure that 'Everything.exe' is already running in the background. then extract the zip into Farr's plugin folder. e.g. on my PC, it is like this: C:\Program Files\DonationCoder\Farr\Plugins. after that, just restart Farr and TinyEv would be available.

TinyEv is newer and as its name shows, is 'tinier' and uses less resources. smiley

XYplorer doesn't index files for searching, but its real-time file search is amazingly fast. I'm told this file manager started out as a search tool--and I believe it! Cool

The newest Index Your Files (version 5) also deserves a mention. I'm not suggesting it's better than Everything or Locate32, but I like that it's portable and can display/view media files in its built-in viewer.

Wow, Index Your Files (IYF) wasn't updated in so long (2 years) I had pretty much forgotten about it. Lately IYF has been updated every few days.

Latest version 5.0.0.7 reportedly indexes FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Linux and Network. Cool
