I'm Going to HELL! Please feel sorry for me... :(
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:28 AM »
Well, it's been a while since I posted. Been lurking though...

But I'm headed for HELL! Pure, utter, total, DAMNATION~!

I've been sentenced to 3 years in Australia...

That means that I have no more "slow" internet speed at 10 Mbps with unlimited bandwidth for less than $30 USD... (Yep... that's the slow one where I live now... but only for another couple days...)

Now I'm facing the infernal dark flames of Australian primitive Internet infrastructure  :stars: with prices 5x what I pay now for half of what I'm getting now...

I wanna cry~!

Right now I need a virtual shoulder to cry virtual tears on and cry virtual wave files~!

What did I do to deserve this???

Take a stroll down some of their beaches on a warm day and do some "sightseeing."
I'm sure you'll soon feel a lot better. ;D ;)

Well, Renegade, you can always look on the bright side - you're going from the Land of the Morning Calm to the Land Down Under. I'd have to wager that things will be much more relaxed down under than in the ROK. As a Quebecois friend once said to me as we fought our way down a Jongro sidewalk at 7:30 AM "If this is the Land of the Morning Calm, Canada must be the Land of the Living Dead!". I'm sure Australia will seem similarly laid back. Embrace it!

Just don't read Bill Bryson's book "In a Sunburned Country" first.  It seems that under every rock there's something in Australia waiting to send you straight to Hell.  Don't pick up the snails!!!

Watch out for the spiders! As big around as a dinner plate some of them are.

A friend of mine told me that those big ones you can spray a whole can of insecticide directly on them & it only stuns them.  :o

Renegade,
I think you are sadly astray in your perceptions of your new (temporary) home.
If we exclude Sydney, and perhaps melbourne, you'll immediately begin feeling better due to clean, fresh air, the feeling of spaciousness, the proximity to nature.
We admittedly do have creatures that we don't want to keep as pets (poisonous spiders and snakes, sharks, crocodiles) but these are much better than bears (and a lot of people I can think of)

Another good thing you may not have considered is that you'll be able to head straight for the beach if you hurry up and get here. Summer's started, temperatures up to round 108F this week where I am, so that makes the water feel GREAT. Also, its BARBIE WEATHER!!!! Great steak, great local wine - you can't go wrong.

With the plethora of outdoors, healthy stuff to do, you won't care whether you've got an adsl modem or a 300 bps acoustic coupler. Only thing you'll want to use the net for anyway is checking the weather forecast (is the weather going to be good or great) and for finding out what's on next weekend (what's the venue for the next international cricket match)
I hope I've reassured you and allayed some of your fears. If not, ask and I'll address your concerns.

Ahahaha, nice one Hertz Man.

Renegade, if you're gonna be in Sydney you're welcome to cry on my shoulder (just be sure a funnel web doesn't sneak up on you while you're blubbering, k?) :P

May also be wondering which fire to avoid and if there is going to be any water to drink.

I should take a big fire extinguisher and lots of bottled water with you ;)

If you live in a colder part of the world you might want to bring a mobile air conditioning unit or a mobile shower unit for when the heat gets unbearable. Try dragging this behind you at all times:

Ooh and don't forget the factor 42 sun screen!!

(Ignore the sour grapes I'm actually quite jealous)

I gotta say that I'd like faster internet, but as has been said: there are lots of other non-internet things that more than compensate.

We do only have 22 odd million people here, which makes a big difference: both in the price of things and the number of people who you bump into in the bush  :)

A friend of mine told me that those big ones you can spray a whole can of insecticide directly on them & it only stuns them.  :o

We used to fish funnel web spiders out of the pool every time it rained, and I remember one time Mum saved a particularly big one to send to the museum, so she took the dead spider and put it in a jar.

Through the night it revived (Funnel Webs have hairy abdomens and can survive under water for some time because of the air that gets trapped in the hair) and she got such a shock that she emptied a whole can of hair spray onto the spider before she realized that it was not insecticide.  ;)

Hairspray might not kill them but it sure makes it easier to dispose of them when they are so stiff they can't move. (it's my weapon of choice for flying stinging things like wasps, for just that reason)

I'd sure as hell rather have bears and fast internet access than slow + capped + filtered internet and all the nasty critters Australia has to offer :)

I'm actually going to be in Melbourne.

I'm looking forward to it as it will be a welcome change from Korea... It's just that wonderful Internet speed that I'm going to miss. (And the insane amount of eye-candy too, of course.)

I most certainly will be making trips to Sydney and  Canberra to visit friends there.

Summer I like, but I've not seen a winter in 2 years now, so I wouldn't mind one. If we count winter by the standards of where I'm from, I've not seen one since 2003/4. (Winters in Korea are rather tame.)

But I am certainly looking forward to the beach! No idea what they'll be like in Melbourne though.

So I won't be trading places with anyone. I don't think my wife would approve. ;) (I got married this past May.) She's the reason I'm moving there, as she's doing her Ph.D. in Banking and Finance at Monash University.

I most certainly won't be looking forward to funnel webs though... Yikes! Spiders just creep me out entirely!

ACK~!

Ok... but I can't promise a huge amount... I've got some software that's been sitting around for almost 6 months that I need to release, some miscellaneous work, and I'll need to get acclimated to things down under.

I'll need to think about it for a bit. I've got a couple ideas, and one project that I've been sitting on for a few years that I'd like to get out of the way.

But at least there's a deadline~! That's certainly a good thing!

On the topic of time, I wouldn't have had any, but my wife can't afford the time to go visit my parents in Canada (I've already been to visit her parents as they're much closer to us here in Asia). We wanted to go for Christmas, but things didn't work out. That kind of shot my plans there... I still haven't told my parents that I got married~! Hahahahahaha~! I was planning on showing up at the doorstep and saying something along the lines of, "Merry Christmas Mom~! I got you a daughter-in-law for Christmas~!"  8) Oh well... I guess I'll be spending that time coding and figuring out some new way to surprise Mom & Dad. :D
