Jessica Williams track wanted ...
« on: November 04, 2009, 03:46 PM »
I would really like to get hold of the track "Midnight Sun" from Jessica Williams' album High Standards (1996).
Its available at Emusic, but not to me. Would happily pay / trade (assuming that's legal - if not, wouldn't even think of doing it).

Unfortunately, reselling digital music is not legal in the music industry's eyes. Heck, they act like people are taking food out of their mouths when the subject of buying used CDs comes up.

If you cannot buy the track at an online music store then the only way to stay legal is to buy the CD or CD single & rip the track yourself.

Thanks Innuendo, in that case I ought not go down the buying route I guess.
(Though on second thoughts, I wonder what's the difference between buying it from X, as opposed to appointing X as my agent to purchase on my behalf)

According to the record industry if the value of X equals an individual that's not legal, either. These dinosaurs are going to cling to their outdated business model till the very end.

What you probably can do is to appoint an agent to make the payment for you, but you be the purchaser. Not sure if that would get around your purchasing problem. You would need to be the one doing the downloading and registering as the purchaser.

I should have probably asked this earlier as this would make it easier to find a solution...

If the track is available at emusic why is it not available to you exactly?

We're sorry, eMusic is not available in your country.
We know everyone everywhere loves music and we want to bring the world of music to everyone. But we have to play by the rules and there are many when it comes to the global distribution of music.
Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions we are unable to offer service in your country at this time. We understand that you are currently in Australia (your IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.x). If this is not where you will be using eMusic, please send an email to [email protected].

A frequently encountered refrain, which grows increasingly annoying. That's reason 1.
Reason 2 is that I USED to have an account with emusic, then cancelled when their policies changed. I was reluctant to rejoin - emusic has now taken the decision out of my hands anyway.

Argh...sorry to hear that. No other online music store has it? iTunes, perhaps?

Seems like the industry is forcing us to use eMule for that (which basically has it).
