Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC 2009 - 4 Free
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:28 PM »
Hi there!

Here's another promotion found by a few 4 free seekers.

SpeedUpMyPC 2009, Uniblue’s award-winning speed up computer solution, lets you monitor and control all your PC resources with easy, one click instructions. System settings, internet usage, disk clutter, RAM and CPU are all automatically scanned, cleaned and optimized for peak performance. You can also selectively disable or remove unnecessary background and auto-start processes to cut valuable seconds off your startup time.
Note that :

SpeedUpMyPC requires the latest Microsoft .NET 3.5 framework, and will automatically install .NET itself, if your system doesn’t already have it. As a result the installation may take several minutes longer than expected – please be patient.
If you encounter any issues with SpeedUpMyPC 2009 installation, you can try installing Microsoft .NET 3.5 framework first from here (link to: http://www.microsoft.com/NET/)”

Uniblue - caveat emptor
Hi Folks,

You will find many web horror-stories with the Uniblue products.  Some discussion here on DonationCoder.  Overall, the company is a leading proponent of scareware for their registry cleaner garbage.  (Yes, they inherited some decent software many years back through a purchase, most of the better stuff has been dormant or dropped.)

Uniblue works heavily through affiliates -- (the affiliates tend to scam through google ads) so be aware of that when reading various techie articles and reviews .. check first if they are an affiliate (we gave a few examples on Web of Trust of Uniblue affiliates shilling for the software).  There is a lot of shill disinformation in the articles and ads, you cannot trust any quotes or references without doing a lot of checking.

One trick would be to have one program try to push another .. thus a free quite dubious "Speedup" program can be a wedge for popups or scareware methods to foist the dangerous registry cleaner (caution: maybe with automatic recurring billing, common in the registry sham-scam industry, always check) on the unwary.

  Caveat emptor.  Even when free.

Shalom,
Steven

PS.
I appreciate for-free-on-internet a bunch, and have spoken up for them on WOT.  This one I consider simply an error.

PPS.
BlackViper & Advanced SystemCare & Glary Utilities are mentioned in the 4-free thread, all fine, except be careful of any registry cleaner, use with great caution, item by item, if at all.

Last week I was checking out csrss.exe (cant remember why but unimportant here anyway)
Uniblue's site first of all says it's a trojan and that it should be removed:

1) csrss.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.
Then they offer a scan,
and only then do the let us know that it's removal will probably cause BSOD's (sounds like it might cause a lot worse even!)

2) The Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem utilizes the process csrss.exe for managing the majority of the graphical instruction sets under the Microsoft Windows operating system. As such Csrss.exe provides the critical functions of the operating system, and its termination can result in the Blue Screen of Death being displayed [etc.]
(my emphasis)

This from a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner (whatever that means...)

REGVAC by SuperWin is the best registry cleaner. TuneUp Utilities and Norton Utilities are also very good. Why don't people go for proven products? I purchased TuneUp Utilities for $19 as an upgrade. I don't regret a bit.
