I find it very difficult to keep track of what level I'm at in Vista's Explorer Tree on the left pane.  Why not have an applet that displays the levels?  For instance the folders could be labeled:

  • "R" for root
  • "1st"
  • "2nd"

I suppose this could also be done by color but one might get confused and forget which color refers to which level.
