OfficeTab now works OK for me! (and presumably it could for you too).
Though this was a really useful Add-in to MS Office, on my laptop it had only seemed to work in Excel and PowerPoint, but not for Word (where I could have put it to good use). This was despite my not insignificant efforts to try to discover and "fix" the problem.

When I started up Word today, I discovered to my pleasant surprise that OfficeTabs now works a treat in Word as well.     :beerchug:

The only thing that I had changed and that I think (no proof!) could have brought this about was that I had happened to use CCleaner (for the first time ever) - albeit with some trepidation - to clean some redundant garbage out of my system. So, I suspect that something was blocking the Add-In from working and CCleaner removed the blockage.

So, all you people (above) who tried OfficeTab and it didn't work or behave nicely in some way - well, it might not hurt to install OfficeTab, close all MS Office applications. Then, if OfficeTab does not work as it should, run CCleaner, reboot the PC, and restart the MS Office applications.

If you try this, then let us know how you get on please.
OfficeTab don't go on office 2002

@Contro: Yes, sadly for all the pre-Office 2007 users out there, if you go and read the Google translation of the OfficeTab site (it's in Chinese, I think), then you will see that it seems to have only been developed for Office 2007.

I haven't used the add-on (since I only have Office 2003) but since I was a bit bored, I thought I'd post a few of the developer's recent responses to comments from users:

Comment 165: PPT 2007, an error occurred with the tab, and it is now in list of Disabled Add-ins (plug-in) and I cannot enable it

Quote
Click on Office Button-->Options-->Add-ins-->Manage--> and select Disabled Items --> Go --> and click on the disabled add-in--> Enable

Comment 169: This clashes with Office 2010 so Word 2010 does not start up
Quote
Close 2010's EDP. Office Button--〉Options--〉Trust Center--〉Trust Center Settings...-->Protected View-->Untick "Enable Data Execution Prevention mode".

Someone did mention that the developer should setup an English version of the website.. ;)

Other than that, it certainly is buggy.
Maybe it is an east versus west issue?

Heh, my bad ;) Clearly had 2007 on the brain.

I'm surprised that there don't seem to be other alternatives?

(by way of ghacks -- thanks, guys!)

I don't know from whom ghacks had the story, but it was already told by Ben at Blog//NOW on the 23'rd of August, and the day after, the 24'th, by DownloadSquad, and "only" the 25'th it was told by LifeHacker, pc's place, and ghacks. Both pc's place and ghacks without telling from where they had the story!! The URL includes the date of publish: http://www.ghacks.ne...t-office/#more-15712

@Curt:
Yes, it apparently is intended to work in Office 2003 + 2007, though I had mistakenly thought the thing only worked in Office 2007, as above:
Quote
...it seems to have only been developed for Office 2007.

However, you may not necessarily be right when you say:
Quote
Other than that, it certainly is buggy.
- because it's working fine in my Office 2007 now, as per my post above:
Quote
So, I suspect that something was blocking the Add-In from working and CCleaner removed the blockage.

What I mean is, maybe it's the system configuration that is causing the problem, rather than a bug in the OfficeTab Add-In - though equally true I suppose is that it could be a mixture of both!

Hey Curt.
Do you mean I can use the chinese programa with excel xp ?

It would be a good new for me.

I have tried at the present moment with WinTabber with no good results.

And Window Tabs is different. It's for put together manually in tabs programs.

Can I try to installs the Office Tab for excel xp or 2002 ?

Thankssss anyway

Excel XP, yes. 2002, No. (I don't know what the difference is, if any. I have 2003)

- I *think* the misunderstanding started when someone said that OfficeTab doesn't work in 2002 and I could see quite clearly that it does work in XP - hence XP must be different from 2002. But as with everything wrong, the explanation is not all sound logic. My apology for the nonsense.

Looks like it's not freeware anymore.  Although I think you can keep using the old (v1.22) version.  The new version v4, is $25.

Funny that they're charging for this as I've never seen much point with Office 2007 because you can stick the switch windows button in the quick toolbar area... but then, I've gotten to hate any extraneous add-ins in Office - they just slow the applications down. A lot!

It would definitely be useful for earlier versions of Office, though.

What switch windows button?  Tell me more!

[edit] forget it, I saw it.  Cool!  Still, tabs are a little more useful.

No arguments from me - just can't stand having to run an add-in to get it...

Yeah, i'm with you there.  but probably not ALL the way there.  It's cheap enough where I may buy it.  Maybe.  I remember intellitabs were way more expensive.

superboyac - what did you wind up doing? Are you running any tab add-on today and, if so, what one? Are you happy with it? Any bugs? Questions, lots of questions...  ;D

No, I'm not using any tab plugin currently.  I don't know why, I think I just forgot about it once it became pay-ware.  I use that built in document switcher that someone mentioned above, even though it's nothing special.  The document switcher is the exact same thing as the "Window" menu that use to be there before the ribbon.

If I were to use one, I'd use Office Tabs.  It's pretty cheap and it worked well.  The only other option I know of is Intellitabs, which is way more expensive and I don't even think it's developed any longer.
