top secret: tech support cheat sheet (xkcd)
« on: August 24, 2009, 03:20 AM »
xkcd finally lets the cat out of the bag and makes everyone an expert in the process.

(i can think of a few people i could give the chart to - but i'd have to staple it to their face so that they don't lose it.)

This is definitely being sent to my mother! But I'm afraid I'll need to teach her how to follow a flowchart.

Heh, brilliant. New activity for Saturday nights: FreeBSD install parties ;D

And the new flowchart is so spot-on, I'm actually ashamed :-[

The flowchart is missing my big-gun, magic bullet:  restart the machine.

This fixes 90% of the problems I get asked about.

;D I hear you. About a third of the problems I get to deal with end up being JOOTTs.

JOOTT  - Just One Of Those Things

(pronounced: jute)

Any system problem that ultimately gets 'fixed' by simply rebooting the machine; or, reinstalling the software.

Absolutely under NO circumstances should one attempt to install FreeBSD under the influence of alcohol.

Same goes for attempting to start a Gentoo Stage 3 after having a few too many pints
of Kanc Country Maple Porter.

Do not be afraid! A botched install builds character.

I don't know if you were just being funny or not but I seriously couldn't share this with anyone I help for that very reason!
You probably wouldn't worry about what people think of you if you could know how seldom they do.

Just great. I see my mother, my mother-in-law, my wife and some other people before my inner eye giving me that ... special look. I am afraid they lack the sense of humor that is required to read both charts.

Sigh. Back to remote support again. Thank <insert preferred higher being> for TeamViewer software.
The more things stay, the more they change the sane.
