Explorer replacement with embedded modifiable console ?
« on: August 08, 2009, 02:50:12 PM »
Hi

I am looking for an explorer replacement tool that comes with embedded console. I realize that I use console command line quite a bit and I do not like end up having massive amounts of console windows around. So maybe having one explorer replacement with console window might help me little bit. I am actually hoping that I can also use Cygwin bash console with it as well.

I am aware of the massive explorer replacement thread which I have been following but I do not remember if any of them offered real embedded console. I know couple had some implementation but they seem to capture the console output and redirect it that did not work that great at all times like Ultraexplorer. it is a nice one but the latest version has performance issues.

Am I right to assume that you've tried TC plugins like:
http://en.totalcmd.p...wfx/Oth/TotalConsole

It gives additional "panel" in TC with console window.

Update for TC 7.5:

fenixproductions,
I did try all those plugins for TC but none of them worked for me in the latest beta including the link you have included. Do  you know how to make any of them work?

All I do is:
1. Configuration -> Operation -> Plugins -> Filesystem plugins
2. click on Configure and add downloaded (and unpacked) plugin,
3. go to Network Neighbourhood (using Alt+F2),
4. hit Enter on Total Console item
5. when new buttons bar is added at the bottom of TC click on "New console" button and have something like:

console.PNGExplorer replacement with embedded modifiable console ?

6. that's all.

Nice to hear it works.

BTW You can add your own button to call it. Just type cd \\\TotalConsole in button's Command field.

and once it's running, can you close it?

FWIW I can hide it, but not show it - for some reason the hot keys don't 'stick' (or at least the couple I tried didn't)

There is TC command witch can be used (from button): cm_UnloadPlugins.
Although I am sure there was a shortcut for that within plugin too. I just don't remember.

would I be right in assuming that would kill all your plugins?

not that it matters at this point, but forewarned and all that...

Kill is not good word here: TC simply closes handles to used DLLs but all of them can be back again if you want to (without the need for restarting application). IIRC it just calls for FreeLibrary(HMODULE hModule) on each working plugin.

There is an annoying thing about this plugin though. Everytime I restore the TC window(from background) the console window comes in full which covers the whole TC area. Does anyone else have the same issue?

I could swear it did not happen before. Well, I will post bug report on TC board later.

I would like to try this when fixed- or if anyone knows of an alternative, that would be good too.  I never thought about this until Kartal mentioned it, but it's definitely a good idea and a timesaver!  One that allowed cygwin and/or windows powershell would be even better!

UltraExplorer has an embedded command prompt window. See red-circled area below:
UECommandPrompt.pngExplorer replacement with embedded modifiable console ?
This also has an option to auto sync the command line cd with the currently-selected folder in the listview. It does this just by pumping cd commands into the command prompt.

But there's no way to insert the shell of your choice (I don't think).

Freeware.

CWuestefeld,
I already mentioned that in my first post:) The main problem with UE`s console is that it does not work that great. I think it is just redirecting a console output. It works ok for simple stuff.  For more complicated stuff it is no use, things like file-folder name completion, or ssh wont work due to the way it works.
