View fixed length record files

(1/1)

dluby:
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a simple way of opening fixed length files and viewing the contents (records/fields) easily?

I know Excel allows this to be done, but I'd like a method to define the layout as a template and to be able to load the file based on a template.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Damian

Excel should be able to do that for you.

You can use the query wizard in Excel to "massage" the data in a file prior to bringing into your spreadsheet. Queries can be saved for reuse.

You can then create custom reports from your data and save those reports as templates.

The simplest method I know is to use CSVed application from:
http://csved.sjfrancke.nl/

Unfortunately, it has limited "templates" functionality (each line represents one row) so it might not suit you.
