DONE: Automatic Copy when highlighted
« on: April 30, 2005, 09:39 AM »
(I don't remember in which program I saw this function, but I think it might be useful universally.)

Automatically copy whatever text is highlighted. So instead of highlighting, CTRL+C (or left clicking > copy) it's already in the clipboard ready for pasting if you want it.

Some extra functions:
- able/disable from tray icon;
- automatic paste in specified document;
- automatic load on start-up;
- optional configuration: copy windows title (of snippet origin)/URL/date/time;
- optional (inobtrusive) beep or sound on copy.

What do you think?

there are some really nice clipboard tools, i wonder if any of them have an auto-copy on highlight...
they can make little beeps and save history of copying, and can be reallly useful.
there are some free and commercial ones.

it's an interesteing request.. though it might be hard to get it to really work right without it going crazy copying things all the time.  from my experience, intercepting clipboard chain is not too difficult but can be hard to get working reliably, so this is probably not a "snack" although it might be possible to find an opensource clipboard util and try to add a function that does auto-copying.

This would be very useful... I can't code it, but I'll definitely download it

it's not really what you are after but 'damn nfo viewer' does auto copy on selection - doesn't allow any editing though.

well it would be trivial to make an editor that does copy on select.
the request here i think was to enable this feature in ALL apps, yes?

I have seen a few progs that does this, but the idea is to make it universal, i.e. throughout Windows.

Obviously it would always copy whatever text is selected: one might limit this by putting some restraints (like only after xx milliseconds or max xx kbs of text).

What do you think?

i'd use that. the delay before copy sounds reasonable.

this is slightly off topic but have you tried any of the mouse gesture type programs. they tend to do copy and paste, etc. and all you need to do is select the text then make a mouse gesture to copy it - do a different gesture and it pastes back. they work system wide so it's half way there to what you are after.

I've seen a program that does this too...can't remember the name but it was made by a Linux user who missed the feature in Windows. It did work universally. Sorry I don't remember the name!

Is this it?

If so, may I have the official title of "Resident Googler" affixed to my user name?  (Just kidding :))

I tested this utility ("True X-Mouse Gizmo") very briefly, and it seemed to work.  Perhaps unfortunately, it does things other than what is requested here, which is to automatically copy selected text.  I recommend reading the entire page linked to above, even though it's about 5,000 times wordier than it needs to be.

By the way, I'm never blindly trusting of obscure software like this; but I did scan it with Jotti (it came back clean), and surprisingly, the file is actually digitally signed (which in itself means almost nothing).

Just a warning:  On my system, True X-Mouse Gizmo 1.4 makes Explorer.exe crash, at least sometimes, when I close it.

true x-mouse (http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/nt/TXMouse/) sure sounds like a program that does exactly what was requested here, and surely this is the mystery program looper told us about.

i note the program had its last update only last month, so it's actively being worked on.  i suggest anyone having issues with it who wants such a program consider writing to the author and offering himself up as a beta tester - it looks like a really powerful program to do exactly the kind of thing people here were interested in.  and let author know he is welcome to come by here and use this forum as means of getting feedback on new releases.

The auto-focus feature drove me nuts.  In just a few minutes, it caused me to make several mistakes, due to focus changing without me noticing.  I don't think I could get used to that.

Anyway, the crash I had could be a conflict with the other shell/hooking software I already have (and I have a few).

btw, forgot to add: nice teamwork looper+scott in finding this app.
i love how the coding snacks section is helping to locate some exotic programs.

it's also invaluable in saving us from recoding something that already exists in a better form.. so you guys who are helping to find and identify existing programs that do what a requester has asked for are making a real contribution here.  much appreciated.

I'm playing around with X-Mouse. It does exactly what I was looking for so far, and I especially like the change of cursor when it's activated.

I have a problem with the other window functions, like autoraise, focus, and so on. I don't understand how to modify the registry to deactivate these (basically I just want the copy function).

Would someone like to help me out on this?

Thanks is advanced!

U R not able 2 disable the autofocus behaviour or the "stay on top" behaviour with the registry.

U R stuck with those settings if U use the program.

I've emailed the author 2 tell him they should B optional.

True X-Mouse Gizmo crashes Opera v8
« Reply #22 on: July 19, 2005, 11:42 AM »
Have been playing with True X-Mouse for a week or so now, and have got very used to the behaviour that it adds - I really think that it does smooth window management and speed up clipboard usage considerably. BUT I believe that it causes serious stability issues with Opera, my webbrowser of choice.

With True X-Mouse running Opera will crash straight to desktop when opening the Save Download dialog, and when opening multiple bookmarks, by dragging a folder of shortcuts into the main window area.

Can anyone else confirm this behaviour?

I have not yet tried adding Opera to the exclusion list within True X-Mouse to see whether this alleviates the problem, at the expense of lost functionality.

I don't use Opera but I stopped using X-Mouse because of the stay on top function mainly.

I did notice the odd conflict or bug.  That was the straw that broke the camel's back.

DragKing automatically copies mouse selections to the clipboard. Reports the number of copied characters, words and lines. Also use Ctrl-C to show info.

Changes:
- 2005.09.04: Updated to v1.1: Also reports the number of words and lines. Added ini file for user defined delimiters.

You'll find the downloads and more info at Skrommel Software.
