Looking for a good ObjectDock skinning tutorial
« on: July 06, 2009, 12:28 PM »
Every once in a while, I try out some new thingamabob to make my desktop experience easier.
This time it's ObjectDock. It looks nice, works well and it's free.

As always, I got annoyed with the backgrounds that were supplied for me because I prefer something a lot more conservative than the "teh @wesum" skins that litter the wincustomize forums.
However, every time I search for "object dock skinning tutorial howto" I get a hundred results on "how to change your background" which is what I don't need, and I can't find a damn thing on the Stardock website.
The closest I've found is Creating a Zoomer Dock Part 1 on the Wincustomize wiki, but it cops out at the last minute when it gets to the .ini file.  >:(

Grr...

What I really want is a step-by-step walkthrough of the "background.ini" file that goes in the folder with the images, which is where the magic happens.
Any takers?

Have you taken a look at the skinning readme in the Backgrounds folder in the ObjectDock directory?  That describes much of what the background.ini requires.  :)

Welcome to DC, Island Dog!

I hesitated to ask this question at WinCustomize because that'd be ONE MORE FORUM I have to keep track of, so I decided against it unless my good friends here couldn't help me.

Anyways... Yes, in all my Googling I saw a suggestion to check out the 'readme' in the backgrounds folder, but when I looked, there was none to be found, just a "Backgrounds Credit.txt".
Perhaps it only comes bundled with OD+?

In any case, if you would be so kind as to shoot over a copy of that file, I'd be most appreciative, and if there are any options not covered in the readme, please let me know.
I promise if I come up with something worth sharing, I'll sign up and show everybody, agreed? :D

I'm pretty sure it comes with the free version as well.  Regardless, I have attached it here.  Let me know if this helps you.  :)

Yep it's there in my Backgrounds folder Island Dog...

I also prefer a 'plain' dock, and find myself using the Diamond skin (tabbed) and just colouring it to suit my needs!

Edvard, do yourself a favour and get the Plus version - tons more options including tabs..

Island Dog welcome to DC! From a 'cat' to a 'dog'... ;D

From a 'cat' to a 'dog'
Is that the Heimlich maneuver?  :)

Right now I'm happy with the basics of what ObjectDock gives so I'll stick with it until I feel the itch.
Now if only somebody would write a Virtual Desktop Pager docklet...

No it's the 'hug' manoeuvre.... :P
